This week we have seen the price of unleaded fuel in NZ take a massive hike to NZD$2.07 p/ltr. 10 years ago I remember paying $1.10ltr

Heading the price rise is of course, BP. The reasoning is that even though our fuel comes from Asia, they are blaming the tensions in Libya as a result. Considering what happened in the Gulf of Mexico last year, they have some nerve. IMO. I have never ever bought from BP since. I love the environment, BP have allways been the one who has disasters.

I have since discovered that our refinery charges a toll per ltr of petrol refined to all of the fuel retailers, and coincidentally the refinery is joint owned by BP, Mobil, Caltex and Shell. BP is the major shareholder.

So riddle me this, I don't understand why Australia sits at $1.42p/ltr at the moment, I just dont get it.

Since regular gas has taken another jump of 5 cents a litre, gas here in Newfoundland is up to $5.75 a gal. and in the Labrador part of the province it's almost $6.00 a gal. so much for North America having low gas prices.

I googled the excange rate of NZD to euro and gave me NZD$2.07 -> 1.09euros.

So you pay 1.09 euros per litre, uh? And this feels expensive, uh?

Here in Greece the last time I refueled I paid 1.60 euros per litre and prices in the Greek islands is up to 1.80...

But of course we don't have a real government here but a bunch of puppet thieves...
Just consider that from the 1.60 euros/ltr, more than 1 euro is only the government taxes

The unrest in northern africa is causing the oil speculators in the commodites markets to freak out. The price per barrel flucuates in the market like crazy with all the buying and selling of a single barrel oil before it is ever refined into petrol (gasoline). Gas prices at record highs while oil companies make record profits. Once again big business screws the little guy.

You're not wrong. I liken this to the tobacco industries.

I personally think the prices are controlled by the major players in the market as they hike the prices down here but ours comes from Asia region, not Africa/Middle East... my opinion though :)

Yeah... But here, the minimum wage is 760 euros/month (even lower if you are below certain age) and the average is about 1000 euros/month. :x

And I'm in position to know that is not the case, there, in UK...

Here in northern Greece, some people do 100+ km just to cross the borders and refuel in gas stations located on the neighboring balkan countries.

It's up to 1.40 €/L here (1,20 uk pounds, 1,96 US$ that is 7,42 US$ per gallon) for 95 okt, and 1,43 € for Diesel (1,2 pounds, 2,00 US$ 7,57 per gallon) about 60% goes to the taxman. I know who I am not voting for in next election.

Here is the DEVIL, Steingrímur J. Icelandic Finincial minister (yes we have one of those)

4 dollars/gallon here in Chicago. I feel for anyone who owns a car and has to pay that much for petrol. I haven't owned a car since 2003, when I need a ride from a friend or relative I always donate gas money for the favor, or I use public transportation which unless it is snowing or raining or terrible cold, works just fine. If going to a music gig I have 1 or 2 guitars which I can handle. If an acting gig, movies and TV, I might have to bring a change of clothes in an overnight bag and that I can handle as well. For theater, a costume change is all, if that, and that is no prob ( for any roles that I was lucky enough to land my costume might be a Tuxedo, I got to keep a very nice Tommy Hilfiger tux that I wore for almost a year as "The Father of the Bride" in one of those wedding comedies  ) basically just carrying a garment bag on the bus or train, easy right? There are times I wish I had a car again but with gas prices and insurance premiums rising and the number of crazy drivers on the road growing not that often. 8)
