So boys and girls, tonight's topic is promotion and booking. I plan on networking with absolutely everyone in the music business locally and putting in a lot of footwork with this band as I have with all my others. As well as local networking I plan to promote the music as heavily as possible via the internet in the area I of Arizona where I plan to be moving.
The question I have for you all is this. As I put together a promotions packet for the band what kind of information/media should I include. Of course I plan on including demo tracks on a cd as well as a dvd of a live performance and photos/bios of the band. But what else other than that should be included? I'm sure that the more thorough and professional I make it the better, so what ideas do you guys have?

My suggestion for promo stuff is:
1. Band Website/Blog with
- pictures
- SHORT and interesting info about the band
- contact info
- song samples
- booking info (in the beginning you can do it yourself and once the income appears leave it for someone else to handle).

2. Youtube/Facebook/LinkedIn and other similar social networking sites
(I am assuming you already have this but make it for the band)

3. Set list(s)

I mean, you got the pretty good idea for your phase one in the music biz. Be prepared for the phase two (get the lawyer and someone to manage boring stuff) if your project works out and phase three (get ready for the LOT of road time) if it hits big. Most people get quite overwhelmed, if it comes it hits you like ton of bricks.

P.S I am not musician but may father has been in music recording biz for 35 years.

Thanks Dan! I think I had the basic idea down already, but it's good to have a second look. As far as phase 2 preparations, I hadn't even considered the whole lawyer idea, and I honestly think it's a good one to have someone that can look over any contracts/agreements so I don't end up signing a deal with the devil.

As far as phase 3, I think the military taught me very well to adapt to changing situations and being ready on the fly and I think I could handle the attention if it got to that point.

Back on the hunt for a bass player...
Yeah, my buddy that approached me about playing bass in my band seems to have gone underground or something. He was real happy to get started on a project, but as soon as I said hey we're gonna have first rehearsal this week he has disappeared. No response to phone calls, emails, texts...nothing. So I called his house number and his girl answered the phone. After I asked to speak to him she came back and said the he told her to tell me that he wasn't interested in playing in my band anymore. Cool, fair enough, nobody was obligated to anything here, but it would have been nice to have that information a little sooner than the day of our first scheduled rehearsal. So that puts everything on hold until I find a bassist, which is pretty hard to do out here in the Bay Area...sorry guys...I just felt the need to vent. /rant

Good morming Tim,I read your post and I feel for ya, and a thing like this is exactly what you gotta go through when trying to form a band, when I said headtrips in my post to you earlier. Sometimes people want to get on with it at first and then they have second thoughts for what ever reasons and it falls apart on there end, leaving you even further behind and holding up any progress the band could have been makeing.Alot of people take it for granted that forming a solid foundation for a band is easy and that its the rest of it thats hard,eg, type of music, ability to play playlist, playlist itself, which I have seen some awful heated arguments over! then theres the original music thing that happens were you encouter players who can do covers but when you ask them to particapate in creation, they fall away becuase there skills lie solely on the copy cat sindrum and they no longer have a structured base set in stone to copy,or mimic.
I think your original endevors are the way your ultamately going to go and you should keep that in your mode, becuase after all its what brings the joy and satisfaction to you so keep it a strong part of the game plan.

I agree with every word of that post Alex. I've been there and done that a time or two, but this I am really dedicated to playing original music and taking place in the writing process; which I really want to collaborate on songs as a band so that everyone has a say on what they're playing on their instrument. And yeah I got an email from a bassist that just wants to play covers because that's "where the money is". Frankly the money is not the motivation for me, just a nice benefit if it comes.

So...Tonight is the first jam session for the band. I still haven't been able to jam with the drummer yet, thanks to the bass player issues. But my brother is going to play bass, and now we can get things rolling. Hopefully all goes well tonight.

Lots of luck in getting your band off the ground Tim.I'm having a hard time finding like minded musicians in my area because most guys my age are out playing Irish/Newfoundland music and can't see beyond it while the younger crowd are into low-tuned mega-metal-it's tough sometimes living in the boonies but then again I awake every morning to the sound of waves on the beach and gulls and other birds singing so it could be worse.

I feel your pain guitslinger...Everybody out here plays nothing but death metal, emo/screamo, or they rap. It has been a long road of searching for like-minded musicians. Finding a drummer that didn't just want to play double bass and pound the hell out of the kit was rather difficult. So far though it looks good with the new drummer and I think he's a good fit for the music. And my brother Jesse has transitioned from guitar to bass rather well. Things are looking up at this point.

For sure Dan. I'll keep updates running in this thread for anyone interested.

As far as an update goes at this point. Tonight will be our second jam session. And I think it'll be time to really start hashing out the details of the songs. I ended up going fishing all day yesterday, so I didn't get another song written yet. That will probably come over the weekend. We have enough to keep us busy; my brother is just learning the songs on bass, and Dave the drummer doesn't know them yet, so we have plenty to keep us busy before we start on more new material.
