Years ago in an interview, they asked if he was using his vintage guitar for touring. He told them he buys a new one every year and writes it off on his taxes! :D

I saw Chuck back in the late 90s while stationed with the AF in Germany, and he sure kicked some butt that day! And I saw him about 6 months ago at his club in St. Louis, and danged if he didn't play and sound just as good, he has slowed down a bit, but he still has that twinkle in his eye that says It Rock and Roll Time Baby!!

Enjoy the everning.

Wow you're so lucky just to be in the presence of one of the fathers of Rock and Roll but to get front row tickets is something else.If Chuck Berry shook my hand I'd get it bronzed.

No, Chuck has been poorly recently, but presumably now recovered thank goodness.

I was lucky enough to be at Chuck's very first performance in the UK. Must have been 64/5ish at the Finsbury Park Astoria in London.

As the top of the bill (also included The Animals, The Nashville Teens & King Size Taylor & The Dominoes amongst others) Chuck walked on stage to a 5 minute standing ovation (not yet played a single note) He responded, & I recall the exact words to this day, "I've been a long time coming, but I'm here now" & launched into the intro for Johnny B Goode.

The backing band was a mixture of The Dominoes (had a brass section) & the piano player from the Teens (a John Hawkins if I remember correctly) Mr Hawkins was having a whale of a time & in danger of getting in front of Mr Berry, but a few quiet words from Chuck got him to turn down a little! Never to be upstaged (apart from the piano burning by a certain Jerry Lee Lewis!!)

Enjoy it.

Hmmmmmmmmmm.....given that old man's reputation, you be lucky if it was just the guitar he threw at you. I saw him first, and last, at the old Filmore East, in Manhattan roughly 40 years ago.

Berry's guitar work is technically perfect on his recordings alone. On stage he delivers less, is known to require the promoter to secure a backing band which knows all his music, is capable of 'winging it', if he chooses to play something obscure, and doesn't rehearse. He has a reputation of being a 'not nice' guy. None of this was known to me over 50 years ago when I began cutting my guitar teeth on his '45's and playing the grooves out of them learning his solos. To my mind, he IS The King of Rock and Roll.
