Hi super kid: you're fixing it when it breaks? Wow - how? Care to show us some photos of what you're doing?

Seriously, you need the right wire for the job. For most single-coils or humbuckers that is going to be 42-AWG coated copper wire. As cjpeck suggested, you can buy that from Stew-Mac:

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electronics ... _Wire.html

Alternatively, with help from Forum user Nutter I found that you can buy wire cheaper and with more options from specialist manufacturers. For example, where he and I live in the UK this company supplies pickup wire with a variety of finishes (some people such as Eric Johnson think enamel coating is better than modern plastic):

http://wires.co.uk/acatalog/gpw.html

I now have a few miles of their copper wire of various gauges waiting in my work room. :D

Or you could enter "pickup winding wire" into an Ebay search. (Actually, that also produces several results from the UK company I mentioned.) If you are in the States here's someone selling 42 gauge wire in small quantities:

http://cgi.ebay.com/PICKUP-WINDING-WIRE ... 2eb134c837

Now. Don't break it as you wind it!

Good luck - C

PS: Are you going to wax pot the pickup when you've wound it?

I'd love to give some pics but can't.I don't have anywhere I can up load them.Do you know any free safe sites I can use for this purpose? What would happen if I used 30 AWG wire? If it works how much should I need?

I'm not trying to start anything here. But I'm 45 years old and my 9 year old niece knows a LOT more about computers than I do. I don't see how a 12 year old kid doesn't have an E- mail these days. I could be wrong, But I don't think I am. 8)

Now we're going to have to watch out for SuperKid boutique effects and handmade pickups!

Somebody correct me if I wrong, but 30 gauge won't work because the impedence would be wrong. You might (maybe, but I doubt it) get a sound but nobody (including you) would like it.

P.S I tried to add pics but they where way too big.Need to re-size, hopefuly tomarow...

Hi again super kid. 600 pixels wide is a dimension that works very nicely on this Forum.

Regarding the wire, as Mr Armadillo says, 30 gauge really is the wrong size. As previously mentioned on this thread, you need 42 AWG. You could experiment with 43 gauge if you prefer: that is also used in some pickups, so by all means give it a try and find out the difference.

But people have been experimenting with these things for more than 70 years and the appropriate size of coil wire is a very well established part of it by now. It's not wildly expensive after all: use the right stuff.

Good luck - C

I wish I could get in bed by 10:00. I wish somebody would let me take a nap. :|

I have homework, too. Superkid, if you go to college when you get out of school, be sure to finish the first time you start...I quit twenty years ago and now I have returned (at age 40) to finish what I started. Only now, I have a full-time job as well as the duties of a husband and father.

...on the plus side, I can tell everybody that I'm only a senior in college...shouldn't that give me the right to act immature and goofy?
