sorry, I just have to talk about this.

So I've got a little piece-o-junk single coil pickup. It had many breaks in the coil and the inside lead was broken off.So I have to take off the coil and fix it then even once thats done I have to take the rest of the coil off. Then give my self some more lead and rerap it. last night I was thinking why am I doing all this work for a CHEEP pickup? then I realized, It's learning, I can make the pickup better, AND I'M HALF-WAY DONE! Can't stop now.And thats the story. My reason for telling you, there is no reason. But thank you for reading anyway. :D

That should be a very good learning experience but coil winding is a very excating and intricate process.Make sure that you use the proper gauge wire and try to keep the wraps as consistant as possible being careful not to under or over wing the pick up. Lots of luck with it,I hope it turns out as good as a Duncan.

what gage should I use? I'm using what is coming off the pickup. but as I'm unwinding it keeps breaking and is a pain to fix. I would like to cut the entire coil off and start fresh. but the wire I have is much thicker it's not super thick though. would it work? answer as soon as posible.

Thank you :D

Most pickup companies use 42 and 43 gauge wire for their pickups. Higher the gauge number the thinner the wire. Makes it also easier to break. The more winds on the pickup the hotter the pickup but you lose a bit on the treble side.

I found this about a week ago. This guy is repairing a CS pickup that broke. He makes it look very easy but making and repairing pickups is his business.

39 g won't work. you won't end up with anything remotely close to the impedance needed.

Impedance is the measure of resistance in conductive materials in a circuit. That's the simple answer anyhow.

Hi super kid: you're fixing it when it breaks? Wow - how? Care to show us some photos of what you're doing?

Seriously, you need the right wire for the job. For most single-coils or humbuckers that is going to be 42-AWG coated copper wire. As cjpeck suggested, you can buy that from Stew-Mac:

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electronics ... _Wire.html

Alternatively, with help from Forum user Nutter I found that you can buy wire cheaper and with more options from specialist manufacturers. For example, where he and I live in the UK this company supplies pickup wire with a variety of finishes (some people such as Eric Johnson think enamel coating is better than modern plastic):

http://wires.co.uk/acatalog/gpw.html

I now have a few miles of their copper wire of various gauges waiting in my work room. :D

Or you could enter "pickup winding wire" into an Ebay search. (Actually, that also produces several results from the UK company I mentioned.) If you are in the States here's someone selling 42 gauge wire in small quantities:

http://cgi.ebay.com/PICKUP-WINDING-WIRE ... 2eb134c837

Now. Don't break it as you wind it!

Good luck - C

PS: Are you going to wax pot the pickup when you've wound it?
