with all the good weather here in the south looks like we will be on the water a little earlier this yr. its almost SHARK SEASON!
i know its off topic but i look forward to this time of year. the fish are getting bigger and the outtings are getting a little more rewarding, and more dangerous. pro's/con's.
this yr im ahead of the game. i have all my gear already and all 4 boats ready to go.
the last of my gear is coming in day after tomorrow and i'll be ready for last minute departures. i have a feeling its gonna be good this yr. anybody else looking forward to a great season? maybe i should mention sharkfin inlays or something to make this post guitar related. :P

We don't need no sharks around here.

This time last year I was preparing for a trip to Florida and a Carribean cruise,no such luck this year even though I have a huge craving to go south the wallet won't allow it. I was born in the wrong hemisphere. Thanks for posting the pix to show what I'm missing way cool, now I think I'll go lie down and have a good hysterical weep.

I could fish everyday. Fishing around pgh isn,t the best. Even boating is some what limited to the rivers and a few lake that let you use over 10 hp. I put my boat in the water twice last year. I plan to make a couple tuna trips over the summer anyhow.

waycool, my wife and myself LOVE to fish. yep, we do the good ole' pond fishin' stuff at the farm i used to work on. we catch alot of bass that i love to eat. there is something about standing on the bank at sunrise that soothes my soul in a way i can't explain. it's so peaceful. no city noise. i forget about my job stress and such. hell, if we don't catch anything it's still a good day. just getting away form this city stink.
i could talk all day about this bro. good luck.

im a fishing fool. ive got hundreds of bass (LM) over 10lbs logged in, with my biggest
at 13.7. dude my fishing gear has taken over 1/2 the house.
(the half my music gear hasnt claimed yet) i gave my bass fishing away to
fly fishing for trout. its a common sight to see me up to my neck in rivers and streams here in south looking for another opportunity lol.
you are correct, its a peace that you wont find in the city. the quiet, no city noise, no airplane's overhead, its great. i use to go striper fishing a lot here. we have one of the best landlocked striper fisharies in the world here. with 758 miles of shoreline in our home lake, ya gotta hunt them down lol.
its often that i can be found on the intercoastal hunting redfish, trout, blue crabs, and finally sharks. lots and lots of sharks. i fish the shark breading grounds of the eastcoast
every spring and fall looking to hook up. 20# of stingray is a common bait, tied in to a 20/0 hook rig, on 400# test leaders. its a great way to spend the weekend.
my favorite way to hook up on them is via kayak, it makes things far more interesting
indeed. tarpon (the silver king) is also a blast via kayak. you hook up with one of those
you will be speaking cuban if you dont slow him down before long. they will tow you
around like like a dump truck pulling a VW for miles and miles lol.
yep i could talk fishing all day and all night. over a 10 yr pediod i charted my bass catches and wrote 2 books on the subject. they are rough drafts but the second isnt completed at this point. i just put it away back in early 2003 and havent messed with them since. i just ordered a couple of these that will be here tomorrow.

http://www.whitbyseaanglers.co.uk/wp-co ... 25-mag.jpg

these have the casting world record for distance. these can be highly modded by the owner. its over 300ft. you can make it past the second set of breakers with these reels on a 11ft rod, which is exactly where ya want to be to bring in bull reds and of course
sharks. these reels have about 18lbs of drag on them and they dont let go lol.
im excited to be getting them. they arrived in town today, but will be delivered tomorrow.
they arent for the beginner thats for sure.

waycool, i'm not near the expert at fishing that you are. probably not near the musician you are either. fact is that it is extremely "cool" to discuss this stuff on this forum. the first day off i get i will take wifey to the farm and do some fishin'. for me it's like taking a valium without taking a valium. i also love to shoot my guns and that too is relaxing.
any tips on the big bass?

best tip i can give you about fishing is this, KEEP THE WIFE CATCHING FISH.
nothing better than taking the wife, kids, g.friend, whomever, fishing with you.
a great cheap way to spend some time with those you love.
take the back seat if you have to to make sure shes having fun. its a blessing to have your loved ones with you enjoying the same things.
my g.friend is/was anti fishing. i had to break her quick if i was ever gonna get her into salt fishing. i use nothing but live bait in the salt, or cut bait.
the first time i took her to catch/get bait i knew i was in trouble. i took her to a local shark expert and asked for any left over baits. he directed me out to his truck,
"its in the cooler, take it all" he said. i knew what he had and it was now or never.
i told kirsten to run next door and get the biggest styrofoam cooler she get get, so she did. while she was away i took a looksee at the bait. BINGO! just what i had hoped it would be. well she came back and was standing on the ground while i was up in the back of the truck. toss it in she said. "are you sure love" i asked. yes just get it over with.
ok, plunk....... "good lord what in the h3ll is that" she said. its huge, and heavy too she said. yes i know. this will last ya all weekend huh? nope thats for 1 rig. huh she said.
yes love, 1 rig. all that for one rod? yep.
what is it?
i better not tell you now i told her. knowing it was her fav animal ever lol.
so we got to the beach and i got my rig set up and in the boat i went. i took the bait out, dropped it off and came back to shore. im setting there and she ask me when i was gonna tell her what "we" were using for bait. i told her it was a 35lb chunk of cownose stingray. she flipped out. it was a looooong night bro. so the next morning i sent her inland to the fish market. i didnt have time to catch bait so i sent her to buy it off the ice.
we used mullet and spanish mac's. i told her to get 2 per rod.
well she came back with a slightly different order than i sent her for. so i sent her back to get the right stuff. a 15in mullet with 2 20/0 hooks makes a ok rig.
so for about a yr she was the bait runner. i taught her how to buy it and what makes the better baits for whatever we are chasing that day. it was long and hard ordeal getting her involved. man there were times our hotel stunk like bait bad lol. but it was a lesson i had to teach her. its hard taking a city girl and turning her into something she just wasnt ment to be lol. now i can just tell her go get some bait for ............ and she knows what to get. the following yr it was about how to catch bait and how to handle it to keep it fresh and lively. in between times it was about what makes good rods/reels, and rigs.
she understands when its $300 to spool up 1 reel.
last yr we didnt go out much. time and a injury cost meus time on the water.
i taught her to finally cast a shark rig and surf rods. that was funny. kinda.
i put her about 20 yrs down the beach with one of my inshore rods and about 3oz of weight. showed her how to cast. walked her through the motions. i had to keep an eye on the other 6 rods so her lessons were short. so i let her be and tended the other rods.
man what a mistake. she would let the line go early and it was no tellin where that 3oz was gonna end up. lol i had to go back over and give her a bit of instruction after about 15 minutes. "ya got it" i asked. yep she said. man it was every freakin cast her weight was landing somewhere close to me. oh hell no, shes gonna kill me. so i grabbed my walkie talkies and took her 100yrd down the beach. "here, do it here" geezus.
so after i got back to our camp (your beach fishing spot) i got a radio call.
"honey, why am i so far away from you" she asked me. "because theres no damn way in hell you can cast that far sweets" i told her. so after about an hour or so i walked down to see how she was making out. she was doing good. she could make it out about 30yrds into the water or so. i was proud. she was finally doing good and nobody had gotten hurt in the whole deal. so it was last night we were talking as i was getting all my rods out and getting things organized. i told her what rods she would be using this yr as i gave her her very own to have and manage. "why do i get all the crappy stuff" she said.
because your NOT gonna ruin or bust up any of my high dollar gear. besides your not gonna reserve any milage starting off with the good stuff. you gotta go through the ropes like everybody else i told her. she didnt like that one bit but its the way it goes.
honey ive taught you in a few short yrs whats taken me my whole life to figure out.
what do you mean she said? well, you can go but the best baits possible, and you know what bait is for what. you know what hooks, line, tools, rigs, rods, reels, and parts and pieces make a great assortment from inshore and shark fishing. youve learned how to pack the boats and all the gear we are gonna need. youve watched me surgically remove hooks from my legs and arms with a diving knife that would send most people to the ER and or end their trip altogether. as soon as you see a situation rise you know what we need that very second. when i tell you what we are going after for the day you know exactly what to take. last yr we taught you how to cast different rods and even did some fishin though you missed all your fish by either bad timing or not paying attention.
(poor thing) this yr im gonna teach you how to put the steel to the fish and be successful 90% of the time. she said ok well what will you teach me next yr love?
i'll teach you how to lie about the size of the fish you catch sweets" i told her lol.
God bless her, shes a good sport jeebus. shes the best catch of my life in all honesty.
for big bass its simple. my number 1 go to bait for any time of the yr is a jig/pork combo.
learn how to use them period. its gonna bore you to death and your not gonna catch crap with them for a long time, then one day it will click. it will hit you like a ton of bricks.
it will all come together and you will just flip out when the big one hits. fish it very slow and drag the bottom with it. if you see a spot and just know if you cast in there your gonna lose your jig and you decide to pass it up, you just passed up the best and most likely spot for the big boy in the pond. oh hes there and he knows your there too.
some times i will cast 30 feet, and it will take me 6-8 minutes to reel it back. thats how slow i fish these baits. i can run a jig across the bottom and tell you if im in mud, rock, leaves, hard pack, sticks, lay downs, brush, bushes, riprap, whatever.
a old fisherman once gave me a jig. i worked with him and he was part of the redman fishing tour. learn this bait he said. (what kind of bs was this lure i thought) so i took it on a trip that weekend. man what a mess that thing was. i lost it. he brought me another. i lost that one and he brought yet another to work. i got so embarrassed that i started to buy my own. he asked me if i gave up and i told him i just started to by my own because he had given me a dozen or better and i lost every one of them.
he said thats good and ' i expected no less". what the hell i asked? he said it shows me your actually using them. huh? it took about a month for that statement to sink in and for me to catch my first bass on them. i used them daily. it was a 6plus lb bass. i freaked out. then came my next, and my next. ive never caught a bass under 5lbs on one if that tells you anything. i got to the point i bought special rods for my baits. jigs get a different setup than spinner baits, which get a different setup than worms, which get a different setup than jerk baits, again get a different setup than, top waters, you get the idea. best setup for a jig rod in my opinion is the basspro inshore extreme rod, about 7ft 2piece, a quality shimano spinning reel, and at least 12-15lb fluorocarbon line. 12 for open cast and retrieve, 17 for the thick brush and sticks. 20 if you in heavy lilly pads.
your welcome to ask me anything you want about fishing and i'll try to steer you n the right direction. i love Q&A on fishing lol. oh and i love farm ponds too. my fav. i can find the big boys in minutes on them. oh and dont think for 1 second that those bass cant hear you walking the shore line. they can.
