Read this recently and have mixed feelings...

http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=1908582

I think John Mayer is a great artist especially when he plays the blues and i like this a little bit(as I enjoy some folk music) but i wish he'd get back to the strat-slingin blues.

Heres a video of John playing his one of his folk tunes...

Honestly, I just started laughing.

He really is trying to find new ground for himself, isn't he?

While I'm not a huge fan, per se, I find most of Mayer's music enjoyable. I think he's a talented guy who is good at playing in various styles (his early acoustic pop, his blues and soul forays and now this, although I don't really like most folk music). There are individual songs of his that I would rate up there as some of the best from the last decade (for their genre).

Two knocks against him--he's a good practicioner of various styles, but I rarely hear a truly original riff or lick out of him. He seems to be more of a (very good) imitator than an innovator. I also have a hard time watching him, because he always looks like he's trying to pass a billiard ball when he sings.

The only other (third) thing that I don't like is his willingness to share his sexual proclivities with the world. I'm not a prude, but I really don't want to hear what he's doing in his bedroom.

Not to worry, but absolutepunk isn't exactly the best source for John Mayer related information. There is no evidence to back up what they claim there.

As far as all the different music popping up, he does this between nearly every album. Disappear for a while, work out some new stuff, bring back a load of it, play it live solo acoustic, throw out the majority of those songs or completely rework them, and release an entirely different album. I'd say it's almost standard practice in his career. I do know that he was going for a poppier sound on Battle Studies, and what we will see next will not be the same. What no one knows is whether the next album will have blues influences or folk influences. My guess is that it's just a folk phase that will never see itself recorded and released.
