Hello everybody!

I recently purchased a Mac and I'm curious to start playing around with Garage Band. I've never used anything to record my playing before. I'm wondering what people's opinions are on their preferred guitar interfaces for Mac's and their opinions on Garage Band in general. I don't need a huge multi line set up just something pretty basic. Thanks :D

Hello Hoeycow,

I'm a Mac user too, and I use Garageband for recording my pupils (I'm a K12 teacher). All I can say about that software is that it's easy to use, funny (there are lots of music loops you can use to create new songs to play along, different factory presets for practicing and even on-line lessons for guitar and piano), and you get the same audio engine of the Pro's software –the one Logic Pro uses– for free.

About the guitar interface, I suggest you Line6 products. Well made, good amp and effects software included, and optimized drivers for Mac OS. They have different products for guitarrist, even one with a little keyboard:

I used a line 6 GX and pod farm software for over year, but on a pc, worked without a hitch, inexpensive. Not the highest quality sound wise interface, those will cost more, but probably good enought to get started and for home use.

Not sure what your budget is but the Apogee products play nice with Apple computers, I'd suggest trying the Apogee Duet :

They are a bit pricey, so if that is an issue, try one of these :

I use the TASCAM US-122L and it works well. Has stereo inputs and outputs in both ¼" and XLR.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

+1

It works great with Garageband and with windows aplications like Cakewalk software. Also it has phantom power for certain mics. I had mine for over 9 years.

+1 on that. I played into Garage Band through a UX2 for years. Apogee also makes some really good quality interfaces, but they can be expensive. A Line 6 interface would be great for what you need now. It also comes with amp/effects modeling software which IMO sounds better than what comes in Garage Band. I mean, it's still software and it won't sound nearly as good as a miked amp, but for what it is it's definitely not bad. :)
