I have a short presentation due next week and the Oscar thing sparked the idea amongst the group I'm in (English speaking workshop), to talk about our own prefered movie, all styles, countries, years, etc... taken into account.
I saw so many movies so far that I had to actually think it over for a few minutes. But in the end I had to admit that "Cast Away" was my prefered one. Tom Hanks in such a fine actor, and the isolated part on a remote island was how I felt for so many years that I had to pick-up this one. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre was a close call, I love John Houston's movies. Another close call was Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon. Anyways, I was also curious to know which other movies would come out as "prefered". Show your love for a movie, please pick-up one and say why you like it.

HI Claude,
Man thats kind of a hard choice...

John Wayne in "They were expendable" Classic WW2 and the sacrifices men and women made to defeat the enemy

Jeff Bridges in "The big Lebowski" Just a weird story, that just makes you smile

Well there are about 100 more... But these rank right up there for me

This is a very educated choice, in fact I had to put aside a lot and I mean a lot of movies to choose Cast away. The first time I saw the Holy Grail, I almost cracked a rib laughing, coiled on the floor. Took me half an hour to catch my breath. Good call Martian. :)

There is so much life in that movie I can't say.

Hi Bill, yes I considered a lot of War movies also, never been in the military myself, but I have the deepest respect for those who serve their country.

Monty Python's Holy Grail has to be my favourite movie with all their other movies taking up the other top 4 or 5 places.Terry Gilliam also did an absolutely hilarious movie with Michael Palin called Jabberwocky loosely based on the Lewis Carroll nonsense poem.I picked up Jabberwocky recently at CD Universe and had forgotten that you need to wear an Attends when you watch it .

5 of my favorite.........

One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest - A movie that shows the darker side of being institutionalized great acting by all but especially Jack Nicholson.

The Shawshank Redemption - A great story by Steven King put to film. Very upliftng film for me.

Flight of the Phoenix (Jimmy Stewart version) - not sure what to say about this one. A movie that all should see. Jimmy plays a great part as the leader (pilot).

The Godfather 1 & 2 - No explanation needed for this one.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind - My favorite SciFi movie...special effects are a bit dated now but it is still a great film.

Captains Courageous (Spencer Tracy) - great story of fishing life and adventure on the high seas.

All great ones, very different one from another though, but that's part of what makes them great choices, they all say the truth in their own way.

I don't watch many movies, but the ones that I've really liked are:

Airplane! - The funniest movie I've ever seen.

Back to the Future - Only the first one though.

The Star Wars Movies - They never seem to get old.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy - As a fan of the books I really enjoyed the movies.

I'll second Rebelsoul on The Outlaw Josey Wales and Pale Rider and add The Unforgiven.

"Josey ain't a hard man to track......he leaves dead men wherever he goes."

CLASSIC!

Favorite films, eh......?

For mystery, "Casablanca"
For drama, "A Few Good Men"
For westerns, "Sergeant Rutledge"
For military/war, "Go Tell The Spartans"
For comedy, "Moon Over Parador"
For spiritual/religious, "King of Kings"
For action/adventure, "The Jackal"

So many movies, so little time!
