Hi there. I am new to the guitar and well music in general. I have always loved music, just never picked up an instrument til now. I have a new Fender acoustic guitar and have been working on notes and chords by ear and by internet.

Due to my limited and varying time schedule private lessons are not really an option. Can you folks help direct me to some good self teaching books/DVD's?

I do want and need to learn to read music. I also want to understand music theory and all the good stuff to help me play the guitar well. I am not looking to start a band or anything, I just want to be able to play perhaps above average in due time.

Thanks for any assistance. There is a lot on the shelves and I want to try to get the best right off.

Ultimate-guitar looks pretty good, and its free. The thing I don't like about it is there isn't any structure. If you don't mind paying a couple hundred bucks, look at Learn & Master Guitar by Steve Krenz from Learning Legacy. It is a DVD series and book that takes you from the beginning all the way through in a logical progression. It seems to have gotten good reviews.
