I've never liked a band as much as after I just quit. I always seem to regret leaving bands, although I havent found the one for me yet. I try to remember how it feels to want to be in a band. Reminds me that it might be better to be in band that isnt perfect for me that sitting in the audience wishing I was up there.

Im in a band now that isnt perfect. Its a 2-3 chord jam band. Every song is the same...accoustic intro...drums and base in.....lead electric (me) in with a little edge to keep it interesting. The songs build and build until I let go a long jam-solo that seems to go on for ever. It all settles down and we build it back up for a big finish. Phish would be proud.

Anyway, I dont particularly like the song list. But as I dig into the songs, Im finding appreciate the songs much more than I ever thought I would. Perfect example....we play Van Morrisons "Into the Mystic". I'll tell you that I got bored with VM in college, after every perfect child turned fratboy pothead wore out their Moondance CD. I'd never tried to play a VM song in a band. Here's the thing....Into the Mystic is very well constructed song. The arrangement is unique, but I never heard it that way. I've been playing along with some YouTube live recordings of it pretty constantly for a couple days now, putting my own spin on it. Funny thing.....Im playing that horn section on my Strat. Its bizarre but its going to KILL on stage.

My point is that, while your bandmate might be a total $@!, you might open your mind a bit more to other ways of doing things, at least for now.

Then.....quietly....on the side.....form your own band.

After reading the comments posted since. I still think violence is the best course of action.

Sometimes it will help the band just to beat the crap out of each other then be creative.

i agree with you shredd. my brand new mia strat rarely gets played and i hate that. the clean tones are beautiful but the bridge PU is just harsh sounding when distorted. (my opinion). when i get the funds i'm putting a seymor in the bridge. i did that to my mim and it's awesome.

Jeebus....have you tried lowering that bridge pickup?

My bridge pup was very abrasive when I'd get crunchy, too abrasive. I lowered it a touch and it really helped.

Food for thought...

i was in a punk cover band in middle school. i hoped into this as soon as i learned the chords to some Rancid,Alkiline Trio, and the used songs i thought i was ready to go. but man i didn't dig that at all. thats besides the point. what im getting at is that our drummer was much like your other guitarist.(The band was me Vocals and Rhythm , My cousin on leads, brother on bass and our close friend on the drums). He was not into my brother and i's style at all. I took an acoustic to band practice one day and he had a S*!T fit and razzed me about buying a strat when " I coulda got a les paul or SG " ah middle school how i miss those days playin in that run down garage  sorry for rambling

thanks a lot guys for your thoughts and advice , some of them gave me a right laugh  niki , it might come to it , a les paul is and can be a lovely sounding axe but it gets a bit monotomus when the bloody things at 10 and on the bridge pup all the time , i've told him a few times to turn his guitar down a bit for certain songs and when he does the sound is great , the other guys comment on how good it sounded but the next song it's back to bloody 10  and if i don't tell him to turn down he just plays the whole set in chainsaw mode , perhaps he might be trying to cover up his playing i dunno .
shred , the tacostrat is my mim strat , sss config , the songs i was using it on were clash ones and a few other lighter sounding songs (meant to be  ) i thought it sounded sweet and gave a different flavour to the songs instead of 2 lp's going at it , i know what your saying mate and i am the new guy in the band and i do try and meld in soundwise , the heaviest stuff we do is some pistols and early damned stuff , no probs there playing with a hb axe , but even when you turn down a hb axe to clean things up a bit it just gets chainsawed over , it gets to be a bit of a pain , but hey , maybe he'll turn down at some point without me telling him
again gus , thanks 8) , cheers
Alan

Alan

Get a octave below effect, lower your bridge pickup's tone control to around 5/6 on the strat. Turn the gain on your jcm to around 7.
The engineer that played the guitar parts for the Pistols, used pretty much that setup, except he used a Fender Twin on 10. Thats how the Pistols got that marching stormtrooper sound.
I'm a big fan of it and use it alot. Even for clean stuff.
Then smack that latchigo's head in when he tells you it doesn't sound good.

In truth it sounds to me like he wants to be the sole guitarist in the band but the drummer and bassist knew he couldnt cut the mustard. Or he just doesnt know how to use a guitar.

It sounds like this dude is a jackass.

I've told my story (too many times) about trying to work with someone who just wasn't willing to compromise or use any diplomacy/democracy, and finally quitting before he completely took all the joy out of playing...he definitely reduced my joy for a while.

There has to be a leader who has final say and actually lead the group vs. "everybody's opinion is equal 100%", but just because everyone's opinion isn't equal doesn't mean their opinion shouldn't be taken into account. If he's the leader, it's either time for some compromise (on his part), time for a coup (get the other guys on your side and fire him) or time for you to leave.

When you're sober (if you ever are  ), talk it out and try to find some middle ground.

If he refuses to give a little, take Niki's course of action.
