I had a couple of guitars before my first really good gear. But it was a Gretsch Anniversay Edition my father bought for me in 1963 along with a Fender Princeton, and I still have both of them.

Les Pauls were discontinued between 1961-1966. What was sold as 1961 & 1962 Les Pauls were actually what we know as the SG model. However, there were some very rare special order "regular" Les Pauls that were made in 1961 & 1962. But in 1963, the SG was formally re-named SG, and there were no longer any special order Les Pauls made. Hence, there is no such thing as a 1963 Les Paul.

???

It turns out the guitar my dad (and now I) have received is a 1963 gibson les paul. The amp was a late 50s Skylark with frequency setting. I still have both, but soon after my dad bought me a MIM Strat and a Fender champion 30. I still have those too.

First of all,01GT eibach is right it is not posible to have a Les Paul from 1963.Second af all how could you choose a MIM strat over a 1960sLes Paul. Its not a matter of strat or LP it's a matter of the fact that in the 60s even a Les Paul junior was of top quality. It's your guitar so do what you want.I love my MIM tele I'm.So I'm not saying that it's bad because its made in mexico. I don't know how your teacher could say you need a new guitar. :D

My first guitar and amp... A 1986 Squire Strat and a little Applause amp w/ built in tube screamer.

I still own the guitar, and it is hanging on a wall hanger in my 7 month old sons nursery, the amp is probably in a landfill somewhere.

It's an SG, les paul Junior...my guitar teacher thought it was worth too much for a 10 year old to learn. I got an MIM Fender because I was 10 and didn't know any better (only had two lessons at that point).

My first set up was a 1979 peavy t60 and a 1980'S peavry rage(dont remember the year exactly.my uncle thinks he bought it in like 83). my first acoustic was a harmony stella that belonged to my mother. when i got in middle school I got my self a squier affinity and a rocktron velocity 15 . Gave the rage and t60 back to my uncle who later sold it.

They're exceptionally well-built, and rather indestructible. They were the first mass-produced guitars to be made by CNC, which is now the industry standard, of course. Hartley Peavey was way ahead of the field with the T-60.

Unfortunately he passed the production savings on to his customers, and many assumed that an inexpensive US-built guitar had to be crappy. They were wrong. Also, the very unusual tone/coil split control has to be used a little differently than with usual tone settings on then-existing guitars, and many guitarists didn't pay attention to that, and thus didn't get the guitar's full range of tones.

First (electric) guitar: 1980 G&L F100 hardtail with Series II neck profile (faster neck). Mahogany body, maple neck, rosewood fretboard, two phase- and coil-tapped humbuckers.
I bought it in 1989 from a guitar/hot rod car/beer drinking buddy (shh! don't tell anybody we were drinking underage!). He immediately wanted to buy it back the next week...I politely declined his offer. Since this was my first guitar, I was spoiled early and didn't realize how great this axe (and most G&Ls from that era) really was; when I would play other people's "lesser quality" guitars, I was baffled at how lousy some of them were. I still have it, and will not entertain any offer for it...unless you're really stupid and offer me five figures (cash only) for it.

First Amplifier: Gibson G-20 solid state amplifier; made sometime in the 70s. Twenty watts, twelve inch speaker, great vibrato, broken reverb tank.
I bought the amp from the same guy for $25 and a six-pack of beer (and then I drank half the beer with him, so I guess it was really $25 and three beers), also in 1989. His father had found the amp in the closet of a mobile home he repossessed (yes, that sounds like the ultimate redneck job, “Mobile Home Repossessor”, but he made really good money). It was given to one of his older brothers, who stripped off the black tolex and lacquered the wood. The same older brother also added the twenty foot power cord and duplex outlet on the back. Because the reverb tank sounded like crap (it was broken, but I didn’t know that at the time) and my second amp didn’t have reverb (Fender Bassman Ten), I learned to play without reverb; I still rarely turn the reverb on my amp past 1 or 2…the dry sound just became a part of my personal tone.
I added the stickers and armadillo brand.
For several years, this amp was neglected as I bought better tube amps (Fender Bassman Ten, Champ, ’63 Re-issue Vibroverb), but recently I started bringing it with me when I went out of town for work (it’s lighter than my Vibroverb) and I have fallen back in love with it. It sounds pretty good by plugging in straight (no effects pedals) and it has a killer vibrato/tremolo/whatever. I would love to have this vibrato circuit in a pedal…it doesn’t necessarily sound better than my Vibroverb’s vibrato/tremolo/whatever circuit, just different and good. When I add pedals to the mix, it really comes alive and rocks, especially for jams, rehearsals and practice. It probably won’t keep up with a full band for a live performance, but it’s good for everything else.

My first guitar was a Squier Tele and my first amp was a Line 6 Spider 15W. It's been lost of fun and money since then. :)

In 1961 A Sears Silvertone, single cutaway LP style. It had a black sparkle finish. I put a Bigsby tailpiece on it. (had to have that for the Ventures songs). Amp was a Silvertone, tubes...10 watts I think. Best Christmas of my life. Pic of my first band (1962) "The Trespassers"
