The thing was, he didn't even own a guitar, just didn't want me to have the amp any more. I felt bad at first, but as time went along I just got tired of seeing the guy in the crowd. His wife told me to just hang onto it and he'd get over it.

The continuing saga of the '64 Super Reverb:

Image

After I gave Ellis $275 for the amp and took it home, I cleaned it up and started playing with it. What a great Fender surf sound, my favorite kind of music back then - Pipeline was the first song I played out live. I hauled the amp around with me for a couple of years, smaller and lighter than the Mosrite and plenty of fun.

Ellis started following me and the band around the area and he gave me the back story on the amp. It seems that Ellis was once a guitar player for the George Jones, he played rhythm in George's band for years. But Ellis had a bit of a drinking problem and he also kept pawning his gear and not going back for it. George Jones himself bought Ellis that 1964 Super and gave it to him and told him to get straight, but Ellis didn't and eventually George kicked him out of the band for being such a lush. True story, Ellis swore it was.

After a couple of years, Ellis approached me between sets one night at The Wharf and flashed a handful of $20 at me, saying he was ready to buy the amp back from me. I said, excuse me? He said, yeah, I wasn't planning on you keeping it forever. I had to wonder if he was on the sauce that night. I told him that I had no intention of selling the amp back, but if I did, it wouldn't be $275, it would be more like $800. Well, old Ellis flipped out and started swinging at me until my drummer, a bruiser of a guy, came flying over me into Ellis and dragged him outside. Ellis tried a couple more times to buy the amp back, but I kept it, for 22 years...

I would've drop-kicked that rump-swab's azz right into low-earth orbit.

Mine was a Hondo, P Bass copy. The amp, Peavey Basic 50...man that thing was only loud if I was by myself...as soon the band got together, even jacked up on a stool it was a whisper...LOL. Then I got my '87 Fender a yr later, but the amp stayed for another 2 before I got my Fender M80...hahahaha.

I find it kind of ironic the George Jones kicked somebody out of his band for being a lush. :?
Just like the 3 remaining original members of the Allman Brothers Band kicked the 4th original member,Dickey Betts, out of the band for drinking too much.
Like someone said,"getting kicked out of the Allman Brothers Band for drugs and alcohol is like getting kicked out of the Hell's Angels for being a badazz".
BTW,the ABB is my favorite band,so no need for anyone to explain the reasoning behind that episode. 8)

Peavey had some good entry level amps way back when, for people who were starting out without much money.I owned a great little amp that I think was named the Pacer or something like that,I used it for practice at home and left the Marshall 50 w. 2x12 for gigging.
I don't know what they have now.

i know a lot of guys that made a good living with peavey back in the day.
i still have several myself. love them. the backstages and bandits were/are my favorites by far. they were as tough as any amp ever made and would never ever think about letting you down. rock solid, and sounded pretty darn good.

Peaveys are good stuff - I've still got the 210 Chorus I bought back about '95, plus an Audition 110 and one of the new Vypyr series, the 75 - now there's a complicated amp! I also have a great Peavey bass amp, the Combo 115 that I've played bass on for years. I also have a nice medium Peavey PA system that can do a very clean 3,500 watts. Fender and Peavey, my two top choices. Seven Peavey guitars, too.

George Jones kicking someone out of a band for drinking would be like a lion being kicked out of the pride because he liked meat!

Before I tell you my first guitar and amp, I need to tell a little story. When my dad was about 8 years old, he wanted to play the guitar. On christmas morning he woke up to a nice red guitar and a brown amplifier. He took lessons for 6 months, gave up, and packed the guitar away in the attic. 35 years later (2001), Im 10 years old and want to play the guitar. He remembers the guitar in the attic. During my first lesson, my guitar teacher tells my dad that he might want to get me something else to learn on.

It turns out the guitar my dad (and now I) have received is a 1963 gibson les paul. The amp was a late 50s Skylark with frequency setting. I still have both, but soon after my dad bought me a MIM Strat and a Fender champion 30. I still have those too.
