The interesting part is that I still have all of them, forty years later, and that amp still cranks now just like it did then.

wow what a story. man that was some big money back then.
i cant imagine how many average paychecks that would have been to buy one.
they look great in my opinion. would be interesting to hear a few sound clips of them should you find the time. ya just dont see or hear of things like these in todays times.
keep pulling the gear out and taking pics and telling the stories. i for one and bet there are several that are enjoying this and looking forward to seeing/hearing more.

That's awesome, we just had that exact same type of guitar in the shop a few weeks ago because it had a neck that had started to split. We fixed it, but the owner took a long time before he came to pick it up. All of us employees wanted it and were making bids on it just in case the owner never came back. Unfortunately, he did.

I got my first guitar and amp way back in 2003. I was 11, but I didn't really start playing for another year and a half when I was 13. It was a purple 2000 Squier Affinity Strat and a Champ 15 which probably came in the pack with it. I got them both used, they were a rental at a music store that went out of business. The amp was a piece of crap, I had to literally shake it sometimes to make it turn on. And it just didn't sound any good either. I sold it at a garage sale for $5 after I got my first decent amp, my Roland Micro Cube. The guitar on the other hand, is still my favorite. It's my #1 despite the fact that I own a few guitars of better quality. The trouble is I've gotten it to the point where I've modified everything I possibly can on it, and there are still some things which go wrong with it which I can't do anything about (especially the bridge it can be a pain). And I don't want to sink any more money into it at this point. But that problem should be taken care of in a few months when my Lounge-O-Caster is ready to go. :D

When I was a kid and playing in my first bands, actually before I had any guitar or amp, I wanted a Fender guitar and I wanted a Fender Super Reverb amp. They were the centerpieces of my dreams, but they were a long time coming. I got my first Fender guitar, my second guitar, when I got home from Vietnam. I hit Keeney's Guitar Studio in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and ordered a brand new 1971 Tele, sunburst with rosewood fretboard in a black Tolex case, all for about $275, I think. It's been a long time.

For years I played that Tele through that Mosrite setup and had a good time doing it. But I came up short on house payments in 1979 and I let that guitar get away from me, sold it to a drunk female guitar player for $200. Sad, but old story. For a while I didn't play as I had no guitar and I was working my butt off to stay alive and keep a roof over my wife and daughter's heads.

In 1982 I stumbled across the second half of my old dream, a 1964 Fender Super Reverb, sitting in a little repair shop in the back of Skogen's TV & Appliance in northern MN. The owner's son was a pothead guitar player whom I knew, so one day I asked him about the Super and he told me it belonged to the bookkeeper's husband, who was an broken down guitar player and would probably sell it. I called Ellis and asked what he wanted and he said $275. A couple days later I lugged that heavy old Fender home with me, real amp number three.

Now all I needed was another good guitar... but there's a lot more to the story of old # 3.

My first guitar was a Ibanez GRG170DX and the amp was a Laney LX20R.
I played with that setup for 2 months then was a bit disgusted (disappointed) by the sound and stopped guitar for 2 whole years.

I began playing again in September, bought a Road Worn 60's and a small Bugera v5, which sounds okay tbh.
I plan on buying a Blues Junior any time soon.

My first electric guitar was sometime in the late 70's. I purchased it new and it was a set neck and I think the whole thing was made from a black plastic material. The brand was Electra. It was actually a nice guitar, I just didn't know enough at the time to appreciate that.
My amp was a hock shop Custom combo and I don't remember the model but was covered with black rolled upholstery that resembled that of a low rider pickup. I have no photos.

Hey Bender!

I don't think Electras were made of plastic, just had a very thick paint job, especially the black ones. I've still got two 70s Electras and they are awesome Japanese-made LP style guitars, the oldest is black HH and the slightly newer one is a light burst HH. I've got the black one on The Wall right now and the other is in an original HS case in the storeroom. I'll try to load a couple of pics when I get on the other computer, see if they'll trigger any memories for you.

My first electric guitar (early/mid 80s) was a bottom of the range Ibanez strat copy in black with a maple fretboard. I only had it a couple of years before the body started to split - it was like it was made of cardboard. My first amp was built locally and only lasted a few months before I went out and bought a Fender Sidekick Reverb 30 which I still have:

The time was the late '70s ...

First guitar: A red pre-CBS Fender Duosonic
First amp: A 60s-era Gibson 2x12 combo that barely worked

Both were borrowed from an uncle who got them back (and still has them) when I moved on. After about two years or so, I graduated to a used '79 Gibson SG Standard (that I still have and love to death) and a monster Peavy half stack. When we rock, we rock ... and when we roll, we roll ...

My first guitar was a cheapy Strat knock off made by Crown, $25 at the local swap meet.
My first amp was a used Silvertone (1432 I think) that I got for $30 at the same swap meet.

1966 Deluxe Reverb and a Gibson ES-330. I still have the amp and do not miss the guitar.

Dennis, Your Mosrite amp looks to me like it could have been manufactured by Standell. Both of the pictures of you look just like me at that age. You are a handsome devil, for sure.

My first electric guitar was back in the middle 80's. It was a Strat clone and a Peavy Bandit 30 watt. I did not have that guitar very long before I traded up to a Jackson V.

StratoBob, have you aged as well as I have? :)

The continuing saga of the '64 Super Reverb:

Image

After I gave Ellis $275 for the amp and took it home, I cleaned it up and started playing with it. What a great Fender surf sound, my favorite kind of music back then - Pipeline was the first song I played out live. I hauled the amp around with me for a couple of years, smaller and lighter than the Mosrite and plenty of fun.

Ellis started following me and the band around the area and he gave me the back story on the amp. It seems that Ellis was once a guitar player for the George Jones, he played rhythm in George's band for years. But Ellis had a bit of a drinking problem and he also kept pawning his gear and not going back for it. George Jones himself bought Ellis that 1964 Super and gave it to him and told him to get straight, but Ellis didn't and eventually George kicked him out of the band for being such a lush. True story, Ellis swore it was.

After a couple of years, Ellis approached me between sets one night at The Wharf and flashed a handful of $20 at me, saying he was ready to buy the amp back from me. I said, excuse me? He said, yeah, I wasn't planning on you keeping it forever. I had to wonder if he was on the sauce that night. I told him that I had no intention of selling the amp back, but if I did, it wouldn't be $275, it would be more like $800. Well, old Ellis flipped out and started swinging at me until my drummer, a bruiser of a guy, came flying over me into Ellis and dragged him outside. Ellis tried a couple more times to buy the amp back, but I kept it, for 22 years...
