I have a Facebook account and only log on once or twice a year, it's just not my thing. My wife however loves it. We both live very far away from our families and have a 19 month old little girl and Facebook gives us a way to share her with our families. They can't be here while she grows up but they can still see her.

I hate to be one of those people who think that anything new is inherently bad, but Facebook, I don't know, it may have its good side, but...Everyone I know spends way too much time paying attention to Facebook. At home, in public, at restaurants, at family get-togethers, when they are with their kids, spouses, etc. If they are not actually logged in, they are texting back and forth about things they saw on Facebook, or creating rumors out of what this one said and what the other one did.
Personally, I am curious, but in no real hurry to join. Fortunately, I have better things to do (like pick up my guitar).

That's because we live in a world where people don't know the meaning of "manners". FaceBook is not the problem, manners are. Nobody seems to remember how to behave in public. There's the language people use, the cutting in lines, the fingers flipped and of course the telephones. The telephone appears to be the most important thing in people's lives right now. You see it everywhere but it's especially noticable in businesses. I'm standing in line at the parts counter for 10 minutes but if the phone rings that caller is more important than me. Then when the guy finally gets back to me he interupts me again to respond to a text on his cel phone. No manners whatsoever.

We live in a world without manners, because of living in a country where you can get sued for any and everything.....people say things and do things that in the past would get their hind end kicked up between their shoulder blades...without a lawsuit.

You may have a point there but whatever the reason might be for the lack of manners it still points to people having no manners that is the issue here. The website is not the issue.

I was previously a registered member several years back, but after my account got hacked I've decided that I can live without it.

I don't think I am, but I'm not signed up, so what do I know. Something about it doesn't seem quite right to me. Aside from consuming your time, it seems like your life is an open book. My sister wanted to show me some videos and gave me her password. After the videos, I clicked on a few friends of hers (that I know) and linked to others...yadda yadda. I felt like I uncomfortable looking through her account, so I logged out. No one had security settings and you've got photos and conversations almost anyone can read. It seems a little creepy to have that much personal info out there. I know people will say its great because they've reconnected with family etc, but I don't see the need in it. To me its just another way for our society to waste time and become a hermit with no real world social skills.

well i mean it's useful in the fact that you can keep in touch with family members and friends. that's all i really use it for. I'm actually friends with a couple people here on the forums. It all depends on your point of view. It keeps me in touch with all my college friends and my friends who moved away to college

Well it seems like there is a love/hate relationship with facebook. I understand why some like it, but I don't think I'll sign up. I've got enough on my plate already, and spending countless hours checking in doesn't appeal to me. Posting pictures, videos and my life in general online doesn't appeal to me either, regardless of security or not.

I should say you are not missing out. I've long deleted my Facebook account.

Just seemed pointless to me after a while.

My two cents

Facebook was great in the beginning getting in touch with all the people you knew from your childhood. Then the novelty wears off and you realize that you have too many "friends"
Ever since I had a kid, I have been on less and less. I have yet to post a picture of my kid and hate going to parties and gatherings where people take pics then post them and "tag" you in them.
Every few month (haven't done it in a while"I go through a facebook clean up and remove people. I stop accepting people too and if I ever run into someone who I rejected, I explain I use it for family only.
And the most important thing..... make sure you have the most restrictive settings, so only people you choose can see ANYTHING about you

One thing I don't get are the people who post their entire life....
"Off to Mexico for a week"
Why would you announce to everyone your house is going to be empty for a week?

I have an account and it's a reasonable way for people involved in a common interest to keep up without someone maintaining an email list. But in terms of having 10,000 friends -- not my thing. I'm not all that happy about the lack of privacy and security either, but then if you watch what you say and who you say it to (as you should anyway), it's probably okay.
