if i am going to buy used gear, i now go to the guitar center used section. this way if there are any problems, i have 30 days to return it.

here is a story- i found a used stage 100 amp at the g. c. website. was told everything works. amp shows up, and it was clean-no marks. plugged it in, and no reverb. pulled out footswitch, and jack was damaged. i paid approx. 125.00 w/shipping.

i called the store i bought it from, and they gave me 2 options:

1- return for full refund
2- they would refund part if the price.

they knocked off enough of the price to make me keep it. found a reverb tank on ebay, fixed the footswitch myself, and i'm still at the original purchase cost.

a lot less aggravation this way. if i buy used again, i will get it through guitar center.

All of my eBay experiences have been very good . . . except one. I was looking for a cheap clone or close approximation of the old Univox Super-Fuzz. I settled on a Guyatone “The Fuzz” TZ2 which attempts to emulate the Super-Fuzz but it isn’t a clone. It was out of production and replaced by the new TZm5 which has a different circuit altogether, but I found a TZ2 on The Bay. I bid and won it for $52 – no returns accepted (I see this more and more). It was virtually DOA so I contacted the seller who advised me that the unit was tested and worked well before shipment. He asked me to ensure the battery was good (it wasn’t but a new one didn’t make it work, either) and to make sure both input and output plugs were properly inserted. They were, still didn’t work.

A fellow guitar player at work said we could test and maybe repair it in the electronics shop out back. It came back to me two days later with painted chipped off of it and the unit still dead. Long story short I sent it to GodLyke/Guyatone, got it repaired and paid shipping both ways.

eBay winning bid - $52.00
Shipping to me - $7.00
Ship to Guyatone - $11.32
Cost to repair unit - $35.00
Ship back to me - $5.00

My eBay "bargain" set me back $110.32. Price for New Old Stock (NOS) - $78 + shipping.

And you know, it doesn’t sound a bit like a Super-Fuzz.

I haven't yet had a bad experience on eBay either, so I guess I'm lucky. Last month I bought a virtually new sunburst PRS SE Singlecut with its original super-deluxe gig bag for $295, and it arrived overnight from Michagn in perfect condition. Plays and sounds killer, exactly as described, shipped the day he got my PayPal payment....

So the problem was originally created by "reputable" GC website selling you a broken item. I hate guitar center, the monopolist. Sellers on ebay, on the other hand, are usually scared to death of gettign one bad negative review, so they wouldn't dare sell you something that's not exactly as described, in my experience.

for all i know, the reverb may have worked before it was shipped. my point anyway, is that it is a lot more comforting to know that i do have the ability to return. it sounds like most here felt comfortable with the ebay experience- i'm glad
