super kid, Don't worry about it.
I hate when people start apologizing for their opinions.
The controversy starts when someone criticizes someone for not agreeing with another persons opinion. Just learn to grow a thicker skin and not take things personally and get defensive. He's just a performer. I never liked him. I've heard plenty of his music and never considered him a genius.

Frank Zappa on the other hand, I do consider a genius.

It wasn't until I started playing that I even paid attention to the rumblings of Prince being an amazing guitar player. Even as a child of the 80's he was lost on me as a pop idol. As my musical world has opened up I've become more of a fan of the less technical players. I don't want to see people construct solos or songs I enjoy someone who just let's it rip. Throw your heart into it and really play that song. Prince falls in that category for me. In my opinion I will keep my technical playing for practice and I can't wait for the day when things jut flow out of me. Music means many things to many people. I try not to get caught up in the technicalities of anything.

I wasn't criticizing anyone for their opinion on Prince MY point was If he was asked to participate did you want him to play like Chet Atkins? Roy Buchanan? or like Prince?
Its not like he crashed the party as an uninvited guest.

Oh and Zappa bores the heck outta me.

That's fine. Not everyone likes Zappa. None of the other musician's crashed the party either. I think what bothers me is that Prince is the complete opposite of what George Harrison represented as both a musician and human being. His whole Hendrix act struck me as odd. Like I said it wasn't the Prince show and he should have respected that IMO. His playing didn't bother me as much as his theatrics. I know he's a "performer" but he made it seem to me like a Prince Circus Extravaganza.
I feel the opposite about Zappa plays Zappa. Dweezil just goes through the technical motions, but the fun and spirit of Frank is missing. JMO YMMV

Performing at tribute concerts requires tact and respect for the performers who are being honored.
Check out the DVD "A tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan" and you'll see what I mean. All the tribute without the theatrics.

Seen it and the Concert for George and those things are different animals all together. This on the other hand is the rock and roll HOF induction and the artist get together and have a great time. I still think thou protest too much but hey what they heck it happened years ago. I'm not even a Prince fan so don't know why I'm defending him. I just didn't see it as any insult to George or his memory.

Super Kid your OK!

Thanks again for contributing to the thread.

When I was 12 I had a red "Ventura" clone of a Gibson 335/336. It a had a bigsby type tremelo set up and a rosewood neck. Not a bad guitar all. I let it go years ago and regret it.

A word of advice, try to hang on to your guitars along the way. You may have one and get tired of it and want to trade it away etc. But more than likely, years from now you will wish you had it back, only to realize your old friend is really gone forever! That goes for cars, trucks, motorcycles and lots of other things, but not necessarily old girlfriends.

I never liked the guy. Don`t like his style or anything else about him. That don`t mean he isn`t a good guitarist, just not my taste of music.

Disclaimer: I am a fan of Prince. Not a sycophant nor a rabid fan, but I like the little dude's music.

To all those who think this solo "sucked" or was too over the top, I ask this question:
Is it because you didn't like the solo, or because you don't like Prince?

He took a very good (but somewhat pedestrian) rendition of the song and set it on fire. Yes, Andy Fairweather-Low's solo was great, but he was coloring in the lines that his good mate Clapton had set down thirty+ years prior on the original recording. Prince took the crayons away from him and went to town.

If you didn't know who played the solo (either by closing your eyes or only hearing the audio) and you imagined it was your favorite (similarly talented) guitarist playing, you undoubtedly would love the solo.

His stage theatrics were just a part of what he is; if you don't like that, it's okay...but obviously Dhani liked it (his opinion counts a bit more in my book) as well as everyone else on-stage. Also, this was a jam celebrating George; this was not a copycat tribute to look/act/sound/pretend-to-be the Beatles.

I've stated (here and elsewhere) that if a guy wants to play a cover song exactly like the original, that's fine...but I'll probably leave. If I wanted to hear that, I'll buy the CD. If we compare this rendition of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" to the original (White Album version), or to the version played during the Concert For George, or to Jeff Healy's verson, and we're all going to have different feelings about what each performance did right or wrong...but at least there's something different about all of them--at least enough to make it worth our while to listen to them.

First of all thanks to everyone who posted here with their observations and insights. You have helped me "fish out" why I felt the the way in which I did about the video.

No, we all do not agree.

The performance, all of it, not just Prince's part, for me, was a little like seeing one of your favorite movie starlets, one who you fell in love with as a youngster, now a old haggard woman. Not an image that you treasure, nor want to recall.

This song was one of Harrisons best. The performance for me was a discouraging overblown cacophony, which is typical of these type events. (Half-time superbown etc.)

I will work to forget ever seeing or hearing it.

The song is titled "While my Guitar Gently weeps" Gently, Prince ? Eric Yes.

Nit Pickers I say!

The RNRHOF sucks.

The guys in that vid, on that stage, that night don't.

If you can play a better solo post it I'm all ears.

George is great!

You a funny guy! :D The first time I saw the video I thought Prince did a great job. The second time I was less impressed and didn't think it flowed all that well. But I'm a snob, what can I say. Since Zappa was mentioned, I'd like to see Prince do a cover of "Billy the Mountain", that would be entertaining.
