In all respect. I think what some here are confusing is "show-man-ship" (stage-craft) and "drama" with "musicianship"

Am I really supposed to believe that all the other players on this stage are posers? They are not musicians? Yes, they are musicians every bit as talented, however, they are not particularly noted "showmen" Prince.....

Prince is a very visual performer, that is his style, he is very over the top with glam because some people like that kind of thing. Prince is rock opera. All of this strutting and ego is to be expected from him.

Personally I don't care for glam, or stage opera, smoke and lasers......or guys flying around on wires (ie Eddie van Halen) or guitar destruction, or playing behind your back or with your teeth or any of that nonsense. Play your music, I there to listen. So I am not in the least bit impressed with Prince's visual presentation. His solo is good but not exceptional, its very visual.

The test is to listen to the audio without the video. Is his guitar solo that exceptional? Beyond the capability of all others? That is the core of my original question. Perhaps I did a poor job of phrasing the question.

I would have liked his showmanship more if the guy wasn't there to hold him to keep him from falling off the stage backwards.....wonder what kind of sound that would make, his head hitting the floor and the guitar hitting him in the face?
Like the guy who threw his bass straight up in the air a few years ago, only to have it bounce off his head on the way back down...I thought that was a joke but it really hurt him.

Never been a fan of Prince, thought the video was boring until Princes solo, Steve Lukather's version though, blows all of it out the water

thanx oneal, i enjoyed that one alot. i see this in a differnt' way and i'll explain. there's a ton of talent on that stage. maybe they told prince to "go for it". in my opinion he did and it sounded pretty good to me. the smile on georges sons (danni?) face says it all. you know when prince leans on the dude while playing the solo. thats kinda cool.
i don't own one prince cd but the dudes got chops. yes, i enjoyed the first solo more. i think george would have enjoyed both.

great observation 8)

I like to see people doing things on stage.I like light shows. But Prince,Prince made it look like he was trying to upstage everybody. Then he had sombody lift him on to the stage like a 3 year old.And at the very end he threw the guitar in the air! It would be cool if he caught it.but he just walked away! I dont like when people destroy guitars, but If your going to do it make it look cool. smash it to bits, light it on fire,or walk off stage with it! :x

The guitar was rigged to be pulled into the rafters it wasn't destroyed. With Eric unable to attend Prince was asked to guest solo. He wasn't showing anyone up and all involved enjoyed themselves.

Lighten up ladies.

Figures, a bunch of musicians gets together to celebrate a much loved and respected friend's HOF induction and somebody tries to twist it into a controversy.

I'm a huge GH fan and thought Prince was great.

Super kid,

You don't need to apologize. We are just discussing this video, I posed a question and your post added to the conversation. Everyone, until now, has been candid and kind. I really don't get the notion of "twisting" anything, in fact this is pretty mild and cordial compared to some threads. If your new here, it's important to know when to ignore folks when they go off.

In the last analysis I think liking or not liking the Prince portion of the video comes down to personal taste.

I think that Prince's performance was very subdued at least visually compared to the showboating he usually incorporates into his acts.I think that Dhani's obvious pleasure in Prince's playing goes to show that Prince was paying hommage to a great song and great musician rather than use the performance as an excuse to upstage everyone else.

superkid I wasn't directing my post at you and I'm sorry if it came off that way.

It's just that many times people assume they know an artists intentions and the facts are totally different. If you ask Prince to play your getting Prince.

rock on.
