Are we sure the strat player is joe bonamassa? Doesn't sound like the kinda licks joe would play.....

Ohhh and I'm totally on the price band wagon. For a guy who made a living out of sickly sweet pop (*ohhhuuhhhh* cream get on top), getting up there and basically saying "well done boys, but heres how it should be done.... bam!". Absolutely shows mastery of the stage, mastery of the instrument and mastery of musicianship in general.

and probably a piss poor human being also......
Rene Martinez....you know,SRV's guitar tech, worked for Prince for a short while and was informed that Prince would not address him personally, that if he wanted to tell Rene something, somebody else would do it  .....I guess he doesn't lower himself to talk to the "help",even though he wanted Rene to help him sound better.

i "think" the dude on the sunburst strat is albert lee? i'm not in any way, shape or form trying to start an argument. me just "thinks" it's albert lee.
by the way, i agree with you 100% mr. nik. some things can't be taught or learned. you either got it or you don't. prince has some serious talent that goes way beyond the fretboard. hell, i'm not even a fan of his and i can recognize that.

Just typical Prince stuff. Didn't do a thing for me.

See Oneal, I think your confusing musicality and technicality. Lets face it, guitar is largely a neanderthal instrument. Nearly every player stuck on some mangled version of a major or minor pentatonic. So technicality is out of the question, really. All that stuff is easy.

What you're missing is that Prince completely conducts that band, every part of that band. Just by how he played, not what he played. You can't learn that, you cant teach it. The Bonemassa solo was just the same as every other boring blues inspired solo since 1977, it didn't do anything. Just a selection of notes with nothing to say and a over emphasis on bad out of tune bending. Nothing to it, you, I or anyone else could learn that. A part with no meaning that contributed nothing and did nothing for the band. Just a passage dumped inbetween where the vocals dropped out. That is technicality. Where Prince made the band go exactly where he wanted em to, what he played didn't matter. Theres no chance of it not fitting, because he was conducting the band to what he played. That is musicality.

Nik I could not agree with you more!!!! That is feeling, not coping the same old. Of course I am a big fan of Prince's playing. If I had a choice of who I would want to be on stage with me it would be Prince over Bonemassa any day of the week.

Totally agree with Nick and CV. I am not necessarily a Prince fan, but that was a stunning piece of "musicianship". Hard to put in words. Breathtaking? Powerful? Amazing depth?

He turned it into the Prince Show. They could have used Malmsteen and gotten the same result. It felt like he pushed George Harrison's music into the background and showed him no respect. YMMV Not whining, I was never really a fan of Prince and his performance here is exactly why I don't really care for him. No biggie if you like him though. We all have different tastes.

So what did you make of Hendrix covering SGT Pepper's, Daytripper or She Said?

That made what Prince did look like mimicry. Hendrix couldn't even get the chords to SGT Peppers right (bang goes the theory of his perfect ear). How's that for disrespecting Harrison's music?

That argument doesnt hold water at all. Every one runs around with a stiff about Hendrix's versions of other peoples songs, when in reality they aint that good at all. Hound Dog was another song he utterly ruined using your thinking to evaluate it.

How about we apply that to 90% of Led Zeps catalogue? It's just old blues songs ripped off. Thats hardly doing justice to anyone and highly disrespectful, they didnt even give Howlin Wolf royalties.
The stones? Chuck Berry, Ike Turner the list goes on and on.
Clapton?

I don't have a problem with anyone covering anything at all. The band looks like the same lineup from "The Concert For George" then Prince comes out upstages the whole band looking like Woody from "Toy Story" doing his same old boring "look what I can do" stuff he always does. If it was his show, he should do what he wants. It wasn't. It's called respect for the other players.

Just my opinion, I don't have to defend it. I just don't like the guy. Everyone tried to compare him to Hendrix, I don't think he's a pimple on Hendrix's arse. Just not a fan and no one will ever convince me to be one. I surprised he didn't bring out a bunch of dancing girls with him. He's a cross between a Hendrix wannabee and Bobby Rush. No offense. JMO

Niki.....I'm surprised Hendrix could play much of anything after taking a few hits of acid most of the time back then...but I think the Beatles who were there liked it...or maybe not. :)historically it's been called the first live performance of any Sgt.Peppers song even though it's only a piece of it...he played parts of songs lots of times, like Sunshine of Your Love,on the Lulu show....but hell, you already knew that didn't ya!

Yes I did know that. And the point I make is than no band plays the same song twice live. If they do they are stale.
I've nothing against Hendrix at all. Infact I've everything he ever released. Whilst when it comes to Prince, I have Rasberry Beret on 45.
The point I'm making is that Prince brought that song to a euphoric, supersonic end in celebration of George.
There have been a lot worse covers of Beatles songs by people claiming to love them!
The whole argument I denounce doesn't hold argument outside opinion. Which is ok, I'm no one to tell anyone what they can and can't like. If Supro don't like it, great, his life, his CHOICE.
I'll defend that for anyone.
What I can't accept is equating it as a disrespectful performance, when so much plagiarism is rife among what we'd call the greats.
Whether Prince played by numbers or from the heart thats down to interpretation too. Interpretation is always biased, it has to be to exist. We judge people on the performances of others and our own experiences constantly.

BTW Sunshine was written for Hendrix, unlike most of Cream's catalogue that was lifted from Bluesmen or trad jazz. :D
