Where is Brian May? Otherwise, I say Eric Clapton.

However, I belive that the world's best guitarist is an 'Unknown' or "undiscovered"

Lets ponder that one

BB is good but he's not that good.
he was just promoted more than a lot of people.
he helped carry the old school blues decade after decade.
he got to play in the better upscale clubs and theater's
due to promotions by the right people. so he was more in the faces
of people than a lot of the better blues players and he got a name built
for himself. im NOT saying that hes not good, im just saying that hes
not as good as the media and promotions made him out to be.
my opinion, albert king smoked him like a cheat cigar, and thats just the
first name that came to mind and only because im looking at one of his cd covers
right at the moment.

agree. the worlds current best guitarist is too busy playing every night of the week, out gigging at this bar and that, from city to city just to pay his bills, he doesn't have time to worry about things like who the best guitarist is.

i have to totally agree with the folks that have said
that "there is no best". ok so lets say there was a "BEST CONTEST",
how would you know who was best? what would decide who was
best? what would be the compitition be like?
what would be the series of skills be that each one would have to go through?
basicly, what would the compitition be base on that would have the end result
being the best guitarist ever/around?
my opinion, there is no way ever to set that up to find out who is the best.
there is no "best" only your fav, or the one you enjoying hearing the most.
and the "best" is not out there in some barn/wood shed, or playing in some bar
and he has no idea hes the best yadda yadda yadda.
a great cinderella story but not hardly. lets seriously think about this one guys.

Well here goes, how about all of those mentioned and then some, if there is such a thing as best player, there all very good at what they do and the one that calls himself the best is shure to ask, in what category?. I will take a chance and mention a few that I never hear when this question comes up, not that there the best but just to give mention, Johnny Winter, L. Boyd, & ,&,&,&,&,etc. All the guitar players who have given there all for all of us, there all the best.

Music is not a competition.
Due to the fact that there are no set parameters, no time line's, it is not an aerobic event ( unless you count stage fright which then becomes anearobic  )
there isn't a start/finish line.

Where would you start :?: Would you go up to Jimmie Vaughn and tell him that his technique is all wrong and does not follow any of the established pedagogical parameters. :?: ( I would love to see that response.. ) Even though his technique works for him and has gotten him to where he is today... So there....ruminate on that for a while :?

I mean in guitarists, you have the equivalent of " Eddy the Eagle " ( Olympics a while back  ) versus Johan Remen Evensen ( they by the way are of different era's ) so perhaps to be fair I should have mentioned Matti Nykanen ( no relation to Nikininja  ).

Now as far as a judging panel, we have the general public. "" "" Talking about a confused panel of judges who all have individual criteria's based on personal preference's and biase's. Not to mention cultural difference's.

Figuring out the number of galaxies in the universe would be about as plausible....
