I would check out buildyourownclone.com--there are several guys and gals that have used their kits to build effects, amps, etc.

They have instructions on how to make an analog delay (with their parts, of course). Here's the link:

It's cool that you're already wanting to build pedals. Who knows? You might be the next Jim Dunlop or Bob Bradshaw
I don't want to discourage you in any way, but you'll see the instructions involve more than just a little soldering and some ability to read schematics, resister/capacitor values, etc. (Although the PDF file I posted above is pretty straightforward). If you don't have any experience doing things like this, I would try to find someone who will let you look over their shoulder and/or help you to do such things. Also, a simpler circuit like an overdrive, boost pedal or distortion might be easier; the analog delays can get a bit detailed.

A good way to get started on things like this is to do a simple modification on an existing pedal, such as the famous (or infamous) R28 modification for the modern MXR Phase 90 pedals (don't do that to a vintage Phase 90, please) or replacing the internal personality slider switch with an external switch on an MXR M-66 Classic Overdrive. Little mods like this can build up some soldering skills and give you the confidence to go deeper.

I hope this doesn't discourage you--I know you'll be able to do things like this, whether you do it completely on your own or have some help. Whether you start small (like a mod) or go big (like the analog delay you want to build), it's really cool that you have the desire to do so.

When you build or mod anything, please post it here for all of us to see--like I said, someday you might be charging us big bucks to build custom boutique pedals! (Just remember that I encouraged you and give me a big discount when that day comes! )

Thanks I allready built my own effect using an old round dial telphone .the effect sionds cool. It clicks your guitar on and off when you turn thr dial. start at one and turn to the number of clicks you want. I also moded my DoD classic tube overdrive. It now takes a Boss AC plug in and has an easy to see yellow LED light. Now I know when its on or off

That's cool ...you obviously have some skills way beyond your years (especially if your signature line "only twelve years old" is true).

I say go for it--everything I hear about the BYOC pedals is positive, so one of those kits would be a great start. Be sure to take lots of pics along the way and post them here...if you can, post some sound clips, too.

since you're the real inventive type try to get your hands on an old reel to reel tape recorder, loop a small piece of recording tape around so it continuously loops around, remove the erase head (tape echo, tape delay), have fun.

or, record a guitar piece on the tape recorder, while replaying put your finger on the reel to change the speed (flanger)

That is more true than people might realise. Pedals and related gizmos are where the real money is at! Recently Forum user Nutter shared these very interesting music business stats with me:



We all know that Fender are the single biggest guitar maker in the world. Yet Roland/Boss are half as big again. Never mind timber: electronics is the part of this business to be in! Who knew?

By the way, just look at how Yamaha are bigger than everyone else put together. Obviously, that is a company with a wider range of activity than just guitars and drum kits. But it all began for them with grand pianos and instrument making is still the core of their company.

Bit tangental in relation to the original post - but it might give food for thought to a smart electronics minded 12 year old...
