psycho gangsta bebop

Glad to see people can have some fun here on this one. As talked about in other parts of the forum recently I also wonder about "alternative". It was such a good marketing word in the early 90's-but it all just sounded like rock and roll to me.

I prefer Blues / Rock / Southern Rock, but Like Jeebus said earlier, I'll listen to anything that makes me feel good.

now its generally a term used by coked up techno douche bags who dont want to call themselves techno or wannabe avant-garde idiots who play a piano and have wailed vocals and call it rock... the new alt rock "scene" is very, very annoying

Show a bit of hip hop genius that isn't negative or overly repetitive and I'm all ears. Any links?

Make no mistake, I'm an old white guy, too...a middle-aged anglo from rural Appalachia, as a matter of fact. And although Bluegrass and mountain music are the genres that I feel in my bones, I have a deep appreciation for the social and artistic context of hip-hop.

Probably because I see the similarities between the origins of hip-hop and ALL other forms of community-specific folk art movements. I do consider hip-hop to be a true form of folk music, and I find extremely inspirational the story of how a bunch of scruffy, marginalized kids in the late '70's South Bronx - kids with a desire to express themselves but scant means or oportunity to do so - created an art movement with a couple of turntables, some old funk records and a cheap microphone.

Just like Robert Johnson, Woody Guthrie, Phil Ochs, and Hazel Dickens, hip-hop was created out of struggle...and although you won't see it in mainstream commercial outlets, there are still plenty of hip-hop artists who still carry that flame.

My spectrum of musical tastes and appreciation is larger than anyone I have ever met personally, so I can appreciate genius wherever it rears its head. I don't however give a rip about the origins of any genre, or that I need to appreciate it on that merit, or feel it deserves my respect just based on that either. The origin is merely a historical footnote and interesting on that level alone. All music styles come from some sort of struggle or hardship so that dog don't hunt. It is the actual work of art itself that I appreciate if done well. It is hard to weed through all the crap to find the gems in any genre, it just seems there is more and more of it, and in general hip hop has a heavier dose of it to weed through.

I don't believe in genre. Load of shite. There is a reason the band names themselves, that IS their genre. Just them.

No 'brit-pop' band sounds the same, or 'punk', or 'grunge', or 'hard rock' etc so every band I like is not from the same genre as the last.

Like I said: load of shite.

technically that shouldn't even be called pop punk. it should be called "pop for people who dont know the difference between mainstream culture and anarchy"

Real pop punk isn't even that bad.... Descendents are considered pop punk, Adolescents are sometimes called pop punk.... But Sum 41 or Blink 182? NO. Talentless jackasses who swear to much so they seem "punk" and "edgy".

mainly rock blues and alternative. Rock primarily from the 50s to 70s. Some 80s metal. Lots of 90s stuff. Also some R&B type stuff (The Platters, The Temptations, The Four Tops)

older blues, folk and jazz are my favorites although I listen to almost anything. To answer one other post, I also like rockabilly but not so much psychobilly.
