I think you mean "any" closed mindedness, as there are just as many if not more oppressors, of other colors and ages, throughout the globe. In other words, It's not an age or racial issue.

My rule of thumb is play it safe and don't trust anyone in any gov't as they are likely corrupt, or anyone under 30 as they are usually ignorant (not stupid -- there is a difference). That and be responsible for oneself, stay above the influence of negativity, and self educate.

Me and Hip Hop? As a generalization, there is too much negativity to make it enjoyable or "speak to me", not to say there aren't exceptions. It also usually fails my "too repetitive" test as well. Having said that, this older white guy has an open mind, so feel free to hook me up with some good hip hop that you feel will fit my tastes.

Make no mistake, I'm an old white guy, too...a middle-aged anglo from rural Appalachia, as a matter of fact. And although Bluegrass and mountain music are the genres that I feel in my bones, I have a deep appreciation for the social and artistic context of hip-hop.

Probably because I see the similarities between the origins of hip-hop and ALL other forms of community-specific folk art movements. I do consider hip-hop to be a true form of folk music, and I find extremely inspirational the story of how a bunch of scruffy, marginalized kids in the late '70's South Bronx - kids with a desire to express themselves but scant means or oportunity to do so - created an art movement with a couple of turntables, some old funk records and a cheap microphone.

Just like Robert Johnson, Woody Guthrie, Phil Ochs, and Hazel Dickens, hip-hop was created out of struggle...and although you won't see it in mainstream commercial outlets, there are still plenty of hip-hop artists who still carry that flame.

My point is that ALL forms of music (or any other form of artistic expression) are contextually valid....

And there is genius to be found in every one, if you take the time to look.
