perfectly said blertles.
unfortunately the death toll has been confirmed at 75 since 11am local time, (it's 1.51am now) and its expected to rise obviously as the focus goes from rescue to recovery.
like you blertles, im glad im living in wellington not christchurch at the moment, but it makes you wonder... what kind of stresses these earthquakes are putting on other fault lines.
At times like this im just glad that as much ribbing we and australia give each other, that we in reality have such a close bond.

Just caught a glimpse of a news story with footage from the NZ earthquake. Devastating seems to be a word I'm hearing in reference to this disaster quite a bit, and I'd say that is a good description. Not sure what city the footage was shot in, but the buildings were in shambles, and still crumbling long after the quake had ended. I truly feel sorry for those living around the epicenter of that quake. I hope you're all able to recover quickly and that you'll not have to deal with any more quakes in the near future.

Recall the San Francisco quake which collapsed a section of the freeway which ran through downtown, as well as a section of the roadway on the Oakland bridge?

Still a vivid memory for me. I lived in San Leandro (just south of Oakland) at that time. And I was a young kid, I was absolutely terrified when it happened. I had heard of earthquakes, but that was the first time I'd experienced anything more than a light tremor. I still remember that day like it was yesterday. They keep warning us that another "big one" is due any day, but thankfully I'm a little farther into the east bay now, and the nearest fault line is a rather small one.

Glad you guys on the forum from NZ are ok, sympathies to all who have lost someone or have someone still missing, we found out my wifes distant relatives in Cristchurch survived ok though their house is completly wrecked, my wife was telling me what a beautiful place Cristchurch is she used to spend time in the square where most of the footage is being shown of the destruction, listening to " the wizard" ranting about the government etc, ( apparently some guy dressed as a wizard pops his soapbox down and rips into everything to an amused lunchtime audience ), and climbing the now destroyed spire of the cathedral.
Our thoughts and hopes are with the people of NZ

I was thinking about you too, Blertles. While at work today I was chatting with a mate that I have know and visited several time just a few miles outside of Christchurch. They live a bit in the country so no damage but it really shook their house up. Your up in the North Island, right? I have some Yankee friend visiting there right now and were in the city when the quake hit. they were unharmed but said it was pretty frightening. Glad your ok!

Yeah that's the wizard of christchurch- he's just a silly old drunk battler who believes he's a wizard  Good quality though. He rants at anything and everything.. has done for years, check him out, he'll have you rolling in laughter

Actually, NZ has a few silly old farts ranting...

Check this one out, he is a famous NZ drunk poet on the radio- this guy is the sort that would live down the road. Sam Hunt is a poet who has a spot on a radio show.. 3:15 he bursts out into a poem, but if you want a good laugh, listen to the whole video  :

When I was in Christchurch a couple years ago, around 12 noon there were a couple street preachers there, but not the Wizard. Really bummed to see that old church crumble. That was a land mark downtown.

I'm glad the kiwis here are all doing well, best wishes to you all :) I can't imagine having the ground under me jumping around, I just take for granted that it will always be sitting there.

......that's because yours isn't sitting on The Ring of Fire. :? I remember driving through Ferndale ,California six months after the 7.0 quake which epicentered there about 18 years ago. Several days before I had been up to Mount St. Helens. After 12 years, the roads into the heart of the event had not yet been restored, and it would be several more years hence before they would be.

'It's not nice to fool with Mother Nature' rang true.

For some reason it seems like the real earthquakes should be up in Rototua where all the steam comes out of the ground!

......There's a difference between magmatic and tectonic quakes.
