Terrible news...Being from California I have been through a major earthquake and it was no fun. Thankfully for me, I wasn't right at the epicenter. I hope for everyone out there that this is the last earthquake you'll have to deal with for a while.

Phew, finally heard from my friend and shes fine, although her house is totally destroyed.

I can't imagine just having your home gone like that, but in the circumstances it could be a lot worse, I'm just happy shes OK.

Still sending thoughts to the Christchurch contingent!

Hey Blertles,

It's amazing how small this world is - the second I heard the news, my immediate thought was "I hope Blertles is OK."

I'm glad you are safe. My prayers go out to your countrymen and women.

Thoughts and prayers to you and yours.
Saw report on Tv. it was some scary s**t.
Weird things are happening all over the globe.
In fact the whole solar system.
Some scientists say it has to do with the solar
system aligning with the center of the galaxy.
happens every 26,000 years.
Some say as it passes the center, our magnetic
field will reverse itself.
Well hang in there all.

An earthquake can certainly be a terrifying experience, but I see that your location is South Florida, and I'm good on living anywhere that has Hurricanes; to me that's even scarier.

Hey thanks all for your kind words- With all thats happened, I sure am lucky I live where I do. Lol what am I saying, Auckland is a city built on a volcanic field  Down our ways in southwest pacific- we havent had the best of luck

The latest is now the death toll is creeping up to 75 as of now, but there are 300 confirmed missing down there. Prime minister John Key has announced that the ENTIRE central business district of Christchurch will be demolished and re-built- imagine that, thats just unreal!. Where the resources will come from, I dont know. 80% of people have no electricity, sewage infrastructure is badly damaged to the point where the civil defence minister advised to not flush toilets, and to use the backyard or the outdoors at all costs. there are major clean drinking water shortages too- water tankers are transporting the only water supply to local schools where people can collect water in bottles.

Large buildings are either crumbling or toppling over, one building has approx 100 people trapped inside rubble.

International search and rescue aid is now coming into NZ: 24 workers from Taiwan, 71 from Singapore, USA has dispatched their 80-strong Disaster Assistance Response Team, 63 rescue personell from U.K and the Australian Govt have sent a massive 440 team and a field hospital at NZ's disposal. All of these countries- especially Japan, Australia, USA, Taiwan have at some point had a helping hand from NZ when things went belly-up and I guess it's a case of what goes around, comes around when it comes to getting the help we need when things are desperate.

The economic impact of the disaster will leave a pretty big dent in the economy. JK has estimated about $15bn which to some in large countries doesnt seem that high but in our economy, that is crippling. banks here will have to lower interest rates for long periods and I would say our currency will be affected for quite sometime.

But anyway, communities have banded together and the human spirit as allways prevails. NZ is proud to be a neighbour to a wonderful nation such as Australia- even if they can't play good rugby

So I'll leave a quote from an Australian TV/radio personality has said:

"Let's help our kiwi mates like they've helped us. ANZAC: not just a delicious biscuit, it's an ideal."
