It kind of depends on what you're after. My favorite overdrive is a custom TS-808 clone which can also be used as a clean boost or MOSFET overdrive at the flip of a switch. It has bass boost too, but makes it beefier.

As far as stock pedals go the Boss Blues Driver is good, but I actually prefer the SD-1. The SD-1 has less gain, which is more what I like. I've actually never tried a really TS-9 or TS-808 so I can't really comment on them. The best thing to do would be to try to find some in stores (like Guitar Center) that you could test out, or the second best thing which is to search youtube for demos to get an idea of what they sound like. Check out harmony-central.com for reviews too. :)

Just to make your life miserable :P , I will suggest three:

Ibanez TS9--there's a reason everybody loves this box...it's dang near perfect.

Danelectro Daddy-O--great pedal with a built-in three-band eq. Deserves much more praise than it gets.

MXR M-66 Classic Distortion--destined to be a classic in more than just it's name...With the cool little "secret switch mod", it is an absolute roarin' rockin' beast.

Fulltone Plimsoul is a good one. Sonny Landreth endorses these...

I use an Ibanez TS9 which is a really good pedal and like myself it is used by 'A LOT' of guitarists. The ts808 is equally as good. But from testing quite a lot of overdrive pedals, the TS9 suited me the best in terms of performance and price. If price is no object maybe go for the TS808 lol :)

Hey Newbocaster!
By and by the OD-pedal question comes floating by, and with a bit of research in my own little brain, I can post a link to a similar question goig on a while back.
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=46165

I recommended (and still do) the T-Rex Møller. Has nothing to do with good old Marc Bolan, but can produce great OD tone which you can ingeniously clean up with the "Mix" knob - so much goodness!

However, it's not cheap. But good. 8)

Anyway, there are also some other great pedals mentioned in the linked thread. Hope it helps.

Cheers

Nutter

What if my fav overdrive pedal is not listed in the poll? There is no "none of the above" choice in the poll

I use two neither are on your poll list. Danelectro's Daddy - O is by far the best bang for a buck that I found...the other is The Route 66 pedal that also has a great compressor included.

I got a load of mileage out of my Bad Monkey. Great eq, decent drive, good clean boost. It's developed a temperamental output jack lately though. After 5 years hard use, I hasten to add.
Works out a £4 a year, for what I paid for it.

I tried a Way Huge Green Rhino over the weekend. I'm in two minds to replace the BM with it, or just fix the BM.

BYOC British Blued Overdrive. Nice pedal and IMO better than any Tube Screamer I've ever owned.

+1 on the Route 66. I also use a Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive. Neither are on the list.

Asking someone what their favorite overdrive is can be like asking what somone's favorite fruit is. There will be a hundred different answers. Mine is banana, but I see that the poll only has choices for apple, grapes, pineapple, and pear :(

Go out and try as many overdrives as you can and get the one (or more) that sound good to YOU.

Thanks for all the recommendations and info.

Sorry about the "other" choice, I didn't think about that one

Regards.

I'm going to throw in another one-the Marshall Guv'nor can give you a nice clean overdrive or you can crank it up for full on Marshall stack raunch.
