LAYLA Group Meet-up (intermediate-advanced)

Time: Sunday, March 6 · 1:00pm - 3:30pm

Location: New York City

Would you like to learn to play every song from “Layla”? In one two hour session, we’re going to cover the 1970 Eric Clapton CD “Derek and The Dominos – Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs”, often known as “The Layla Album”. This group session will take place in New York City.

Derek and the Dominos were a blues-rock band formed in the spring of 1970 by guitarist and singer Eric Clapton with keyboardist Bobby Whitlock, bassist Carl Radle and drummer Jim Gordon, who had all played with Clapton in “Delaney & Bonnie & Friends”. Derek and the Dominos released only one studio album, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, which featured prominent contributions from guest guitarist Duane Allman.

The album, which has received praise from both critics and fans alike, is often considered to be the defining achievement of Clapton's career.

We are going to cover EVERY song. For every song, I will provide you with a detailed lead sheet and chord diagram index. Every song is truly fascinating and fun to play. We’ll also talk about the history of the songs, the song forms, chord progressions and the gear that is used.

The fourteen songs on “The Layla Album” are:

1. I Looked Away
2. Bell Bottom Blues
3. Keep on Growing
4. Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out
5. I Am Yours
6. Anyday
7. Key to the Highway
8. Tell the Truth
9. Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?
10. Have You Ever Loved a Woman
11. Little Wing
12. It's Too Late
13. Layla
14. Thorn Tree in the Garden

Learning these songs can be tricky because on any given song there are 3-7 different guitars overdubbed. So the question becomes, “Which guitar part should one learn first?”

The plan is this: I’ll pass out a detailed lead sheet and chord diagram index for each song and I’ll teach the group how to play the primary rhythm guitar part: Guitar One. This way, you can “carry” each song. Once you learn this part, you’ll be able to play the entire song. If you sing, this is the part you can play to accompany yourself.

Once you learn this primary rhythm guitar part you will be able to play along with the CD and you’ll be able to play these songs in a band. At some other point, you can learn the other guitar parts and you can learn how to develop solos on the songs chord changes.

Tuition for the two hour course is $100/person.

Please let me know as soon as possible if you are interested as I am expecting a full roster.

Feel free to let your friends know and to pass this email on to them.

These songs are challenging and this group is designed for the intermediate to advanced player. However, this group is open to all musicians, all instrumentalists (vocalists, guitar, piano, bass, drums, etc), musicians at any level, and non-musicians as well.

I look forward to hearing from you.

With best wishes,

Luke Johnson

One of my top 10 albums of all time and I like what you are doing and if you can make some scratch good for you. I spent a year of my life with that album and just the fills on Bell Bottom Blues would be worth it if you could deliver that to some players but I would think their is just to much going on for a player to soak in in a short time, as you stated their are so many guitars doing so much at once though Key to the Highway is a live track and another gem full of major and minor licks. Good luck on a great idea and choice of album that I would recommend everyone to learn.

The Class is 2.5 hours and yes it is a lot to learn. I've spent a lot of time writing out the lead sheets - professionally engraved with FINALE. This is NOT a transcription. These are charts - like what I would give my own band so they can play the songs using specific chords and in some cases specific accents but in a lot of ways each player adds their own personality. For some songs the lead sheet is only one page. LAYLA is 5 pages. The lead sheet also shows the Song FORM. It's right there. You can't get that from the Transcribed books out there. And you know what? I found quite a lot of mistakes in those books.

I'm a professional musician with a lot of experience gigging , touring, recording, composing, etc. I love this record. I've been playing this music since I was a teenager - over 30 years. The charts and the info I'm offering in this one class will help people to actually play , memorize and solo on the songs.

This class only covers one guitar part - guitar one - the primary rhythm guitar part. Learning the guitar harmonies and soloing techniques is material for another day.

Stop by brother! You'll be in for the time of your life!

Peace!

Luke

Well good luck,man....I love the album also,my favorite player of all time Duane Allman, lit a wildfire and fanned the flames in that studio.
Add his signature "Joy To The World" lick in the solo sheets....and also the bird call. :D
