Hmmmm......Funny how " Music " the term seems to be the least important factor here.
Let's see, scales are a series of ascending or descending notes which form a basis for a musical (hopefully ) passage.
Very much like a staircase, scales or steps allow us to connect the various notes in between octaves. But in such a mode  as that they make sense and are pleasing to the listener ( or at least to the listener's musical sense ).

That's it, I'm going to watch the Red Violin film, I need to be reminded of classical music, thus that there is hope out there

Eat 12 eggs a day, raw; practice push ups with one finger, take a little pcp, and get at it    ,

no but seriously keep at it, practice songs YOU like, no matter how hard, screw the little "step 1, step 2...etc.", if you push yourself at the beginning you'll force yourself to learn techniques that will make easier stuff a breeze. The first song i learned was "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and when i went back and memorized chords and strumming patterns and scale patterns i had already known how to incorporate and execute them due to elements of the song i learned. You'll be surprised at how much easier it is later and how much individual technique there is in your favorite music.

dont take lessons, i mean an online vid every now and then would be great for direction( i suggest justinguitar.com) but really learn at your own pace, your own way, working on what you want to, you'll find you'll develop your own style quicker, plus lessons are a waste of your parent shard earned cash. That's what really tired me out on metal in the first place, the lack of anything more than technical players who focus mostly on speed and accuracy and less on expression; just my opinion by the way.

......seriously now.......learn what 'legato' means stylistically, in all of its nuances, and start listening to people like Holdsworth for example.

Go for it a good book is Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar -by Troy Stetina. I am a rock/blues player who dabbles in every style of music and when done tastefully shred is as soulful and played with as much heart heart as anyother music, though to me only a handful of players do it to my liking and as like most who are turned off by it they have valid points in most players seem to just be trying to blow their wad with no sense of harmony or melody. When it comes to shred Satriani is probably at the top of the field for me because he knows how to write a song with melody and uses his chops and technical ability when needed. Take Vai's For The Love Of God I do not know how someone can say he is not playing from the heart, and when he hits the middle of the song where he is in hyper warp speed though the notes are wizzing by ,they fit the song perfectly, Always with Me Always with You is one of the most beautiful instrumentals I have ever heard. On the other hand I am not a fan of Yngwies music though when I saw him live in G3 I have never seen a player with as much technical ability and was simply floored and would pay to see him anytime though I still cant listen to him on a CD lol.

Speed is an asset but it does not make someone a great player and is a tool just as important as a great vibrato. It is a very physical and demanding style and for me about 10% of shredders hold my interest musically. All in all just delve into it but become a player that can make music that is enjoyable as Youtube has a million guys who can play at warp speed who I do not think are good players. Good Luck.

And that is one of the reasons to like Jim Root (In stone sour especially) and Mr 5 :)

I often wonder, watching him, whether or not he plays that way deliberately, as if he wants his audience to suffer performance envy. I can't be that everything he plays is fast, or even that it ought to be

+1 on Satch. He actually has soul, bless his hairless little head. Saw him play at the Bronco Bowl in Dallas during the Flying In A Blue Dream tour (when he sang!), and he was great.

The YouTube Syndrome of "I can play 45 million notes in this 24 second segment but I can't integrate it into a decent song..." is rampant, especially amongst players who are not playing in a band or are not playing live in front of an audience. These bedroom Yngwies drive me batty.

Give me Hound Dog Taylor any day.

:x ...must...resist...temptation...aww, screw it!

He plays that way because he's impressed with himself, even more than his fans are impressed with him. He plays that way on his records, too, not just live.

I'd rather wear steel wool underwear than listen to his crap or the crap of those who play like him.

Ah, yes--an eleven-fingered man who had few technical skills, spoke and sang incoherently, had no bass player and inspired a young man to start a label just to record him...all with a Teisco Del Rey guitar through a Sears Silvertone amp.

Dang, I love his music.
