I am personally not a shredder (and I don't like 90% of the shred solos, etc. that I hear); I can appreciate how difficult it is to shred properly, and I appreciate the technical expertise it takes to do it.

Having said that, I would rather hear a poor technical player with soul than a great technical player who doesn't go anywhere except to shred-ville.

If you want to play that way, it really does require:
(1) practice,
(2) a good instructor,
(3) practice,
(4) learn as much music theory and as many modes/scales as possible,
(5) practice some more.

For starters you don't need to shred to be a good guitarist.Shredding is fairly new in terms of guitar playing and is only a sign of technical speed, not of talent or feeling. If you want to learn how to play well take some time to listen to different genres of guitar playing and listen to what the real masters of the fretboard play. You say you are in a jazz band so maybe if you listened to guys like Herb Ellis,Joe Pass,Larry Coryell etc. and you could also listen to greats like Wes Montgomery and Les Paul especially.
Blues is another genre that would help you immensely with players like Muddy Waters,Hubert Sumlin(with Howlin' Wolf),Albert King,Buddy Guy etc.You say that you really need help but did not specify what kind of help you need, help with scales, technique, reading sheet music or tab.If you could be a bit more specific I'm sure that the folks here would be all to happy to help. There are all kinds of sites on line to help learners get a better grasp of the instrument and that show the chords and tab to popular songs. One of these sites is http://www.chordie.com plus there are sites with prerecorded tracks that you can play along with.
I'm glad to see that you're taking such a serious interest in guitar,it shows that you have the right amount of determination to do well with it.Just let us kow where you particularly need help and you'll find more than enough people here to help you along.Lots of Luck and keep on Pickin' and grinnin'.

i would partly agree with this in the sense of someone not quite as technically brilliant like slash playing a heart felt solo than just flurry's of notes for minutes on end. However...if you want to learn how to shred there are some vids on youtube.

Look for tremolo picking, sweep picking, economy picking and legato playing to start off. It's not easy and will take time and patience so you have been warned lol
Don't know if you have a metronome or not but as the old cliche goes....a metronome will help with your playing, starting from slow to fast.
I think there is actually a lesson on Fenders website for economy picking.....
Anyway good luck!!

To answer you poll you should have another option for a good amount of time but not always lol
Hope this helps!

Jazz... :?: :?: You answered your own question, take a jazz guitarist like Tal Farlow or Larry Coryell or Wes Montgomery or Pat Metheny or John Mclaughlin.
If you are really going to define the overused term " SHRED " then those musicians epitomize the term.
Only one way to arrive at that level.
Practice, be open to other forms of music regardless of the instruments or culture.
hard work is really 85% of the equation, time spent in quality rather than volume.

Studying Classical would open up other pathways, gypsy jazz, celtic open tunings, flamenco, the list is endless as there is a redefinition of the guitar throughout the last few centuries.
Yes I did say centuries.

Some time back I was trying out a DLX strat at GC and was playing a Gaspar Sanz composition "Rujero", someone stopped, listened and complimented on the tune itself. Asked me who it was by, to which i replied "Gaspar Sanz, then asked me who he is  I responded " was" he lived about 300 years ago 1640-1710, he just looked at me puzzled and walked away.

There is so much music available out there, that one can absorb that the limits are endless.
Good Luck and Have fun ( the most important is that you must enjoy what you play for yourself first, the world comes second )

I stand corrected--when I think of "Shredders" I think of spandex & big hair & pointy-headed 80s guitars.

Yes, there is tasteful jazz that veers into the shred category, and some classical pieces played on electric can be categorized similarly (although I'm rarely fond of such pieces, outside of the "amazing stuntman" factor)...

No correction intended or needed, I just have a differing definition
Everytime I'm asked to listen to a so called HM shredder, i have to silence it as it becomes painfully apparent that none of these people have taken the time to understand a written piece of sheet music and what all the funny scribbles mean in terms of musical notes and the silence in between.

Sorry to those offended by the Curmudgeon outlook

One way to learn shredding is to learn scale and modulate and syncopate them scales. Do it as fast as you can.

Personally, I do not play that style, but hey, if you like it, then go for it..
But I do have a question....

Choice two is "MOST OF THE TOME"

What the hell is a TOME?

Inquiring minds wanna know.

Okay, I did a Wikipedia search and found this here...

Quote:
A TOME is a large book, especially one volume of a multi-volume scholarly work.

So, what book is we talkin' 'bout here?

To learn to shred...you pretty much need to learn as many scales and their variations as possible. Shredding, as in metal and hard rock is typically playing small phrases of scales in repetition and the runs between scales are basically variations of whatever scale is being used.
I personally am not much of a shredder, but in a time long past I was the lead guitarist in a band that required a little shredding here and there. I pretty much learned the technique from Alexi Laiho's (Children of Bodom) YouTube videos. Just look up Alexi Laiho lessons on YouTube. If you can get past his accent he is a great teacher and I find that he explains things a little more simply than most.
My last piece of advice is a very simple one...Practice Practice Practice! And as you learn the scales just remember to leave some room for "music". Good luck!
