So if I like the tone of a Fender Twin, but don't want to carry around the heavy large amp - what does anyone recommend that's similar. Harvard, Yale or Blue Deluxe?

I tried a brand new out of the Blues Junior III last week. The clean channel was awesome. The dirty (or FAT) button was just dreadful - there was NO sweet spot at all. Can I say "f@rt" on here. Well mine sound nicer than that BJ III,

Either a Princeton or a DRRI. I played a Twin for over 30 years, nothing sounds quite like it. The sheer power is where you get all that clean headroom. The lower the wattage, the less headroom you'll have. If you like tubes, a Frontman won't do it for you. A 5-10 watt tube amp will sound a lot louder than a 25 watt solid state amp.

+1 Princeton or the Deluxe reverb have great tone for small amps and work well at pubs or other small venues.

Fender Mustang is the best combo amp period!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its only $100 for the smallest one, which is a 20 watt, or you can go all the way and spend $250 more to get a Mustang V cabinet

if you go with a DRRI, wait a few months... the ones coming out right now are absolute piss (i speak from experience)

i tried getting one about a month ago. rattling sound. brought it back. go to GC to try more out. first one blows fuse when turned on. fuse is replaced; buzzing, no reverb. other one works, but no vibrato, light broken. employee said hes had about 5 come back in the past month. my dad calls his buddy who runs a music store in boston; all 6 hes sold recently came back.

i ultimately went with a hotrod deluxe... i love it...

but moral of the story is: stay away from DRRIs for the time being

Princeton Reverb Silverface (12watts) or reissue (15watts). The best home/practice amp ever for Fender tones.

It doesn't make it a Twin by any stretch of the imagination. I tried the Mustangs, I owned and gigged with a Twin for over 30 years and it's not even close. You feel a Twin when you play it. Presets mean nothing. It's a solid state amp trying to mimic tube amps. It's a Mustang, and sounds like a Mustang, not saying it's a bad thing if that's what you like, it is what it is, an affordable, light weight amp and made in China. But most digital and modeling amps leave me cold anyway.

Don't think that just because the presets say Tweed, Blackface, Twin, Deluxe Reverb etc. that they actually sound like real deal. I have a GDec 30 that has presets for Tweeds and Blackface amps and are a huge joke and the Mustang sounds similar. On the GDec I just shut off all the effects and use the drum patterns or live tracks to practice. Do a side by side comparison and you'll hear the difference.

Mustangs get the approximation of the sound right, but it's not quite there (tried one the other day). Fine for playing at home, but if you're looking to get hit by a wall of crystal-clean sound, it's not the solution. Really, only a Twin will do for that!

if you want the same tone as a valve amp... then get a valve amp...

the blues deluxe and blues jr are very nice solid amps that arnt that heavy or bog to lug around, although they dont have the same power as the twin... the blues deluxe is loud enough for almost any application... ( like making everyone with in 100m of you deff...)

we got a deluxe reverb in the shop. not too big, super-duper cleans too so I would give it two thumbs up (the only thing that worries me about getting one is that it has like 12 tubes... which is great but I don't have the money to replace tubes)

BUT! You should really try a super-sonic too. We got one in the shop and it sounds like ear ecstacy. May not be a twin sound, but its a tonal monster. If I can get the money saved up, I might try to see if my boss can order me one. Its cleans are great (though with the DR you can hear every nuance, including any mistakes :? ) and the "burn" channel is superb.
