Have any of you guys that have built your own guitars actually tried winding your own pickups also? I know there is a bit of an art to it but I am trying to decide whether or not to give it a try. Didn't know if you guys have tried it and decided to just buying the pickups was less frustrating or not.

Hi cfl2005: in short, yes. Quite recently as it happens. Now that I've had a bit of a go at it I plan to do a few more and run a thread about it here with plenty of photos, if that would be of interest.

Abso-freak'in-lutely! :D

I'm very much looking forward to that thread! I reckon that will come in very handy as I've just picked up a replacement sowing machine (the first one spectacularly burst in to flames!) to be part of my home made pickup winder! 8)

It came with a fully functional, variable speed foot switch too! Just need to work out how to best attach one of these counters....

I did a thread a long time ago in the Pickups section of this Forum.

Hi Orvilleowner,

Any chance you could post a link to that thread? Can't seem to find it with the search function....

Cheers!

Andy

I've been curious about something, and I suppose this is a suitable thread to ask: What's the chemical difference between alnico I, alnico II ,etc?

It is the amount of cobalt in the magnet.

the search function does seem to be a bit dicey. I'm having better luck using google and restricting to this site (like I searched on "orvilleowner winding site:www.fender.com"
(without the quotes) and found it:

You're welcome.

I wasn't into the digital photo world when I rewound it, so I can't show my set up.
Suffice to say that I followed the Stew-Mac "use an adjustable speed hand drill" set up.
