I've seen a few people doing this (most notably noise rock guitar and producing god Steve Albini), and I'm wondering how???? It supposedly provides much more comfort and freedom, and keeps the guitar from swinging freely as you turn....

Is it some special strap? Wrap around waist???? I'm very interested in trying this out....

You could try buying a thin strap and threading it through your belt loops, but the weight mights make your trousers fall down.

after a bit of interwebs searching, i came upon a site run by albini and co... its the website for his studio. apparently, its done (at least by him) with a very long strap wrapped around (and crossed, like an x, on your back) just above your hip bones... gonna have to try this out...

Hey Floyd - I know exactly what you're asking about. No it's not like the cheezy spinning guitar schtick that ZZ Top does. Steve Albini just uses a regular guitar strap. The trick is to make the strap long enough to wrap around your whole waist front and back.

Straight from Albini: "I just use a normal guitar strap, but extra long. It only works if the strap pins project from the horn or rim of the guitar. If the strap button is on the back, it isn't stable".

First time I saw Shellac live (Chicago 1995. Shallac was opening for Fugazi. Great show, but for another thread :) ) was when I first saw someone playing with a strap around thier waist and I was baffled how the guitar was hanging. But after seeing Albini spin around I could clearly see the strap just wraps around the waist once and attaches to the regular strap buttons. I tried it myself breifly and it works well, but I would suggest installing straplocks just in case. I

edit: sound like you already might have found the site I linked to while I was typing all that out.

yup, thats straight from the thread i saw

by "horn or rim" that means pretty much anything with the strap buttons on the side of the guitar, right? like, my mustang or my dean (essentially an LP with crazy hot pups) would be perfectly safe with this, right?

Yes, the only guitar I've ever played with a strap button on the back is an epiphone EB-3.

Yes strap buttons on the side of the guitar will work. It will NOT work with an SG or any other guitar that has the strap button behind the neck heel.

It might be awkward on a Les Paul shaped guitar with a stubby upper bout since the guitar might want to slide to the right (if you are right handed). You'll be OK with the Mustang. The Strat shape is perfect for this though.
