Irony/sarcasm are not really a good idea in an online board. Most people can't read between the lines, and some are not native english speakers.

Cheers

David

unfortunately sarcasm and irony are part of peoples personality and to stop it would be like saying people shouldn't laugh at x,y and z incase someone gets offended. Peace

as long as posts stay within the Terms of Use, I see no problem with anything that gets posted. The moderator will take care of those who step out of line and Brad does a good job of making the call when things have gone too far or gotten out of hand.

This is a great forum, of which i often get a " Are you on the Fender Forum Again/still :?:

I also arrived here by accident, searching for a particular answer, found it and decide that this was worth joining and contributing. Sometimes I've been wrong and was corrected, I would not expect anything less for any of us here.

I will disagree with the Irony and Sarcasm opinion. Both are an integral part of any language, primarily here english is spoken for obvious reasons.
The difficulty in using Irony or/and Sarcasm to reply to a post is in being eloquent, staying on topic and keeping personal attacks or vague references to such topics out of the equation.
Not always so easy, Yes some people will misread a reply, which then needs a rebuttal to point out that either it was in humour or that the statement was not intended as an insult.

Because the majority of us on the Fender Forum are from Western nations, our norms may be offensive to some in other parts of the globe.
However educating us as to why we trespassed would be beneficial in furthering our disparate understanding and ( for myself ) is much more preferable of a platform for an intelligent debate rather than an endless series of posted verbal attack rebuttals.

And now back to the playroom. 8)

What a timely topic-I just got off Facebook talking to a friend who was a regular Forum member but has cut back his participation for the same reason. It seems that some people are much too quick to attack someone else's knowledge or intelligence over a difference of opinion. There are ways to repectfully have a difference of opinion without personal defamatory attacks. This is supposed to be a friendly forum for like folks with a common interest to inteact. If someone makes a flawed statement or quite innocently gives information that they got form somewhere else but believed to be true you don't need to call their IQ into question just state sensibly and diplomatically what the correct information is without ruffling feathers. In the words of Dandemus"Don't condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own.You may both be wrong."

Hee-hee! I like the English comedian Stewart Lee (which seems to place me in a tiny minority 8) ). I saw him just the other day and at one point in his show he went off into a careful explanation of his "tools of the trade", including irony. He said that you could be pretty sure about half of any audience wouldn't get it and would take what he was saying literally. Which was very useful, because it means he can play to two completely opposite demographics simultaneously - those who understand and those who take everything at face value. He felt this might double his income stream...

Mind you, I avoid irony and sarcasm here at all costs: it just doesn't work in this medium. The few times I've found myself at odds with other Forum users is when I've attempted very mild tongue-in-cheek remarks (far gentler than full-on irony) - and they've been taken as devastating insults. Nearly always you can just politely explain you didn't mean it that way, and then it's OK. Nearly always...

Cheers - C

I see the problem :o Many of the guys here are intellectual thinkers. Many of the Musicians I have encountered in my life have been. That said, it is not intended to be an insult. I wish I was myself. Over analizing some of the post and making a quick reaction or response." Nee jerk" as we call it. I like the KISS method. We all know what that means."Keep It Simple Stupid" works in most situations. I bet I will get an over reaction
"K" "I" "S" "S"

The forum will be and has been what we make it. I know a lot of us old timers will welcome new members and try our best to calm things down when needed. I have seen some trends here at times when it's not as friendly a place as it used to be , but it's up to us all to make this the forum the friendly, helpful, fun place we've a reputation for!!

I agree with Mr. Hopkins. :) This forum is unique in many ways. I think the longevity and civility of the older members has contributed to the friendly atmosphere. I want to thank all of you for the wealth of knowledge that you so freely share with the newer members despite the fact that you've seen the question in one form or another many times. I lurk alot and post less because I don't want to inadvertantly offend someone by my dry, smartelic sense of humor.

I have no problem at all with almost any comment as long as it's not a personal attack on someone. This forum is really calm and informative most days. Political discussions can get a little out of hand. All everyone needs to realize is just about every comment on here is an opinion. Especially about equipment. Try not to get all defensive if someone doesn't like what you use. If you stuff works for you, that's all that counts.

Here you go.

Two times I have written a post that has been "misunderstood" recently, and taken to a diffrent direction than I orginally intended, like my post with the picture from Fox where they put Egypt in Iraq. That post became somehow a political disscusion about how bias news agencies are. And some of the posts were... shall we say "less than friendly", and sadly I particpated  .

But in all this forum is really friendly comparing to many other posts and I think that we can be proud of that. :D

The post by Floyd the B in which he says "WHY MUST I HAZ NO MONEH?!?!?!?" Its just one of those meaningless post that most ignore anyway. Why would any one get upset about it? Not the first time someone posted something out of boredom just to post. Appears to be a nice teenager and now days with everybody text messaging words being spelled as sounded or shortened. To just throw a statement out there for comment in such a manner who cares, it would only bother me if it was in a back and forth conversation. Plus we are not all human spell checks.

And we are not all thin skinned. I've had debates with others on here and they've gotten heated but nothing is taken personal. This forum is good because it does always seem to work out for the most. Letting it slide off is easy enough.

This is a pretty civil group of guys and gals that will pass on their knowledge in a heartbeat. It is what originally drew me to this site and what keeps me around to this day.A few feathers will get ruffled now and then and rarely, some will go off the deep end.Life goes on.This is a great place to come and share, or to have a laugh. It will survive......... 8) Mike (Rockin Geezer)

i'm going to be very blunt. i don't tweet or even text. i don't do facebook or have a myspace thingy. this forum is all of that stuff for me and i really enjoy it. the help, opinions and suggestions are far beyond what my simple mind ever imagined. the simple fact that i can communicate with so many like-minded folks is overwhelming at times.
i've seen stuff get nasty and it usually involves politics or religion. i have made the mistake of getting involved in those discussions. however, like said before, this site takes care of that before it gets out of hand. thanx brad.
all of you are like family members i've never met.
i thank you
