I've just pulled this from the About/Guitar newsletter by Dan Cross.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is currently displaying an extraordinary exhibit of guitars, until July 4th.
A web site here, including photos, videos and interviews.
Some cool instruments worth checking out. 8)

Thanks for that link, Rhumba! I am mightily intrigued by the craftmanship, and I'm sure so will others around here... I'm thinking for instance Ceri..?

:)

Anyway, have a great evening! That Fender HotSeat been keeping you warm this winter? :-)

Cheers,

Nutter

Rudy Pensa just published a book about those three; I think it's the exhibit catalog.

Hi gents. :) Ceri likes this one:

http://blog.metmuseum.org/guitarheroes/ ... -red-1994/

For a moment there I couldn't see how he made the grain work out on the control cavity cover on the back. But then I sussed it out. Nice!

Thanks for the link. Right up my street! :D

Cheers - C

Hi Ceri, I thought you might find them interesting, it will take me a lot longer to figure that cover out ( are we talking matching laminates here? ) I don't know. Very nice guitar though.
I personally like those jazz New Yorkers and the Teardrops with the mando style top cutaway.
An impressive exhibition I bet, for those lucky enough to get a real close up look.

Cheers man, take care.

I know what you're saying man, I'd love to get up close and personal with them guits.

Something tells me 'Smoke On The Water' would not go down to well there though.

Hi Rhumba: well, I can't be certain, but I think it is solid timber rather than a veneer. It looks that way up at the heel. If that is right then at first I was scratching my head to work out how he could have cut that cover out with such a tight fit all the way around, even using a very fine jeweller's piercing saw.

But then I notice that the grain doesn't quite line up. Close, but not spot on. (Notice the line of grain on the cover up near the top mounting screw that doesn't correspond to a line on the body.) So what I'm guessing happened is that he took a thinnish slice off the the whole face of the back of the guitar - like cutting a slice off a loaf of bread. Then cut the cover out of that to match the cavity he'd meanwhile carved into the solid body. That way it would be nearly the same bit of grain and would match closely, as we see:

Flippin' gorgeous work, which ever way it was done. Very cool! :D

Cheers - C

Nice one Ceri, well sussed. Yeah, near the top screw there is the mis-match. Not noticable at first glance.
I wouldn't mind any of those guitars in my collection. :D
