Wasnt the SG going to be the new Les Paul but was renamed the SG after Les Paul himself told them he hated it?

Yeah, Gibson redesigned the LP without asking or telling Les Paul about it. They slapped his name on it and he got mad. They had to change the name. He had nothing to do with that guitar.

Well not quite--they were looking to change it--they did, but Les's contract was expiring and his popularity had slipped, and he was in a messy divorce--so for a variety of reasons they came out with the SG shape with the Les Paul name on it. Then later they changed it to "SG" removing "Les Paul" name until the late 60's.

Looks like we're both right.....from Wikipedia:

In 1941, Paul designed and built one of the first solid-body electric guitars (though Leo Fender also independently created his own solid-body electric guitar around the same time, and Adolph Rickenbacher had marketed a solid-body guitar in the 30s). Gibson Guitar Corporation designed a guitar incorporating Paul's suggestions in the early fifties, and presented it to him to try. He was impressed enough to sign a contract for what became the "Les Paul" model (originally only in a "gold top" version), and agreed never to be seen playing in public, or be photographed with, anything other than a Gibson guitar. That persisted until 1961, when Gibson changed the design without Paul's knowledge. He said he first saw the "new" Gibson Les Paul in a music store window, and disliked it. Though his contract required him to pose with the guitar, he said it was not "his" instrument, and asked Gibson to remove his name from the headstock. Gibson renamed the guitar the "SG", and it also became one of the company's best sellers. It has been said that Les had ended his endorsement contract with Gibson because he was going through a divorce, and didn't want his wife to get all of his endorsement money. Later, Paul resumed his relationship with Gibson, and endorses the instrument even today (though his personal Gibson Les Pauls are much modified by him — Paul always uses his own self-wound pickups on his guitars).

So Gibson did pull a fast one on him and he did use it as an excuse to get out of his contract to keep the wife from getting at it.

Well, that's why I mentioned a variety of reasons--everybody who was in on it tells it a little differently.

I suggest you read "The Sound Heard Round The World" for a more accurate account of guitar marketing history. Gibson was widely considered the premier electric guitars well into the 70s, and Fender struggled to gain footholds in the markets beyond country and surf musicians. The Jaguar and Jazzmaster were designed to try to tap that market, and largely failed. Also, from the 1940s through the 70s, acoustic guitars were a huge part of the market, and while Gibson acoustic were revered, Fender acoustics were, well, reviled.

Even in the early days of rock, Gibsons were considered premium guitars: there were more Les Pauls and SGs at Woodstock (Blooomfield, Santana, Townsend, Alvin Lee, Jorma, etc.) than Strats, Jimi notwithstanding.

Fender was the undisputed world champ in electric basses, though.

But to get back to the original post, no, I don't think Gibson's don't all sound the same. Back in the 70s my '68 Les Paul Deluxe and my '64 SG could not have been more different from one another.

Am I the only one that thinks that almost all Gibsons sound the same? They all have double humbuckers, but the biggest diff is the hollow on solid body guitars. Any thoughts?

Nope. Wildly inaccurate.

First, you're totally leaving out the P-90 and mini-humbuckered guitars. Second, among their HB guitars there's a pretty broad range from vintage PAF-type alnicos to hotter more modern alnicos to ceramics.

I think he's talking about gibsons as in the les paul standards, sg standards and stuff just as you picture a tele with two pickups and a strat with three and all the normal stuff. But yeah, even the sg standard and the les paul standard (which both cost the same as buying like 4 good mexican strats!) sound different because they use different pickups based on what sound they go with. There are also other gibsons that are completely overlooked here like the V, the explorer and my favorite gibson of all time, The Firebird :D

Not sure about the v and the explorer as far as a differance in sound, but I know Firebirds are really unique as far as sound goes, (and shape obviously) and they really pack a good punch. I think they're gorgeous, but again, I can't pay 2 grand for just one instrument! It's just not right!

Do tell?

I seem to remember a LOT of classic rock guitarists that never picked up such an instrument, and played either Les Pauls or SG's.

Why would you say such a thing?
