I've noticed that guitars with duel humbuckers always have them positioned so that the six adjusting screws are closest to the neck and the bridge. Is there any reason for that? Is there a right and left side you have to pay attention to when installing them, or can they be put on the guitar any way you want? In other words is there a bass and treble side to a pickup? I'm new at this so please don't laugh.

It's kind of a personal preference. The string and whole pickup height are usually adjustable. I know some players who do the reverse. Humbuckers can sound a little dark so if you put the adjustment screws closer to the bridge, you'll get a slightly brighter tone. Towards the neck, and it gets a little fuller. A close friend of mine turned his neck pup around to get a little more brightness. As far as a certain side, I'm not positive. I just know what I've seen.

No there isn't a definitive way of doing it, if you are splitting coils, the adjustable coil will give you a different tone depending on it being closer to the bridge or closer to the neck when reversed 180 degrees.

You did not mention which guitar as some HB's are only two wire and thus unable to be split.
( meaning dual coil to single coil by way of either a DPDT switch or the Volume pot with a Push-Pull feature.) if you have 4 wires coming out of each Humbucker than you can really experiment and change your sound by just a few mods, coil splitting, changing caps and tone pots or just flipping the pups.

Look into it, just Google coil splitting HB's, you should get a lot of links refering you to rewiring schematics as well as Q and A blogs..

Welcome by the way and good luck
