My cousin just baptized his first born the other day and named him Theodór Elvis Ólafsson. He is the first Icelander to be named Elvis. Now there are very strict laws in Iceland and there is a special name commity that names not on a special list have to go through. The name has to decline in Icelandic and my grandfather, who is a Professor in Icelandic Studies, made the argument that Elvis declines like the Icelandic names Jóhannes and Tómas, Elvis (nominative), Elvis (accusative), Elvisi (dative) and Elvisar (genitive).
Here is Elvis Ólafsson:

Congrats.

Interesting, the government deciding what one can name theitr sprog.

Sure would result in gobs of arrestsin Chicago.

Plural for this one, beaucoup Elvises in one setting constitute "Elvi," as in the convention in Vegas.

The goverment fears that because there are so few Icelanders that the old fashioned Icelandic names need to be protected against todays multi-culture... it just old fashioned racism basiclly.

The individual family should preserve their heritage, not the government.

How would you like it if you lived in a predominantly Hispanic area and the government said, "No, you can't name your son 'John' after your grandfather, he must be named 'Juan' because we're preserving our heritage."

Iceland's policy is not only racist/ethnically restrictive, it is restrictive on a person's freedom of expression.

My wife (of mixed white and Mexican descent) and I (European Mutt and Native American descent) would not be able to name our child anything under draconian laws such as these, because we wouldn't be able to come up with a name that reflects all of the aspects of the kid's heritage.

Congrats to Elvis' parents--and you too, Cousin!

The laws used to be much harder. If you were a non-Icelander seeking an Icelandic citizenship you needed to either change or add an Icelandic first name to your name. For example Abdul Muhammed whould either be Alfreð Muhammed or Ari Abdul Muhammmed. F-ed up... I know

But my little Elvis is getting alot of coverage now even abroad in a Swedish media.

The boy not even 3 months old and almost as famous as the King himself
Here is the picture from Aftonbladet of the happy but tired family.

Hi Nonni: I have a foggy memory that the names rules apply in one or two other Scandinavian countries as well, is that right? Norway, maybe? Perhaps it was even in Denmark in the past? Can't remember...

Anyhow: the minute I first read this thread a couple of days ago I just knew the idea of laws about what names you could call your children would stir up amazement and outrage from many here! I decided to sit back and watch the fun...

Congrats to young Elvis and his parents.

Cheers - C
