I'm flattered, but as much as I want to take credit for it I can't.
I'm really just parroting things I've heard Jimmie Vaughan say. I went to that masterclass at NGW a couple of years ago and he talked about things like this. I just took it to heart and tried it out, and it seems to be working so I thought I'd share. :)

I was in a band like that too, Screamin' Armadillo. And sometimes at jams I feel like that. Like if you stop playing someone's going to jump in and play something over you or you're afraid if you stop it will sound like a mistake. It's hard to do, but knowing when not to play is as important as knowing what to play and when.

Smart--and humble, too? It warms my heart that you're a fellow Texican.
It's cool that you give credit where it is due (to the esteemed Mr. Vaughan, one of my favorites of all time for phrasing and tone, no less).

You're right, it makes for discomfort and tentative playing when you're trying to compensate for another person's lack of solo/stage/performance etiquette. You possibly have the added problem of people overlooking you due to age. Since I'm now officially in the young geezer stage of life (40), people seem to step back and wait a bit more and not step on the solos as much...or maybe I'm just choosing better stage-mates!
