I would suggest the BOSS CE-2 (Made in Japan) unit to you.

You can still get them at a reasonable cost.

The real issue with the newer ones is that the Buck brigade chips are all gone and no one makes them any more.
The CE-1 and 2 used these, same with your high end Boutique units were. The one made by Voo Doo labs was a good one, but they have dropped production of it, well because the chip that they were using they ran out of and they could not find another source.

The BOSS CE-1 is still the best, but the prices for them are just unreasonable.
