That said, Niki, the robbers were probably British, too, eh? BTW, what'sit got to do with nationality? It's more about old versus young, no?

At any rate that lady deserves our respect. Well done madam!

You get thieves and criminals everywhere.

Where else do you get bag swinging pensioner vigilantes?

What I want to know is, how is the jewellers shop that she prevented the theft from, going to repay her.

She deserves a bloody big diamond

We have them in the states too, but they usually just shoot the thieves instead of beat them with a purse. I know of the 4 jewellers that own shops in my hometown, All of them a licensed to carry a gun and so are all their employees. Yet, none of them has ever had a robbery attempt while anyone was phsyically at the store.

I know a lot people think guns cause a lot of crime problem, but they also stop a lot too.

I don't see the taking of life as a deterent for anything. Look at the states that still have the death penalty for proof. Least of all crime, which the US has more of than anywhere else in the world. Though the UK has more incidents/population, the US has more incidents overall. Unlike say China or India that have greater populations, yet less crime, and gun ownership is unheard of amongst the public.
All legal gun ownership does is raise the stakes. If you're gonna break into a house knowing you could get shot, your more likely to kill the occupants. USA got 5 murders per 100,000 members of the population last year. The UK scored 1.28 per 100,000.

The highest scorers for 2004 were South Africa and Central America with a whopping 37.3 and 29.3 per 100,000 respectively. Guns and defence kill's are legal in those areas. North America (including Canada) scored 6.5 per 100,000. Europe (where gun ownership is very limited) scored 1.5, per 100,000. If you want it based on Continents.
Gun ownership promotes murder, the facts speak for themselves.

While your statistics maybe vaild notice they say murder not gun related murders, 5 per 100,000 is significant but not necessary gun related you don't need a gun to murder a person. While the number of deaths is higher in the US, so it the population. US 308 million to the UK 61.8 million. FBI statistics show only 60% of murders are gun related which drops that number to 3 per 100,000 in country with 5 times the population of the UK.

Legal gun ownership isn't the problem, it is illegal gun ownership.
