My wife just had her first book published, and it concerns hearing loss. She has lived with a profound hearing loss since the age of thirteen, and has compliled an excellent list of resources for people suffering from the same condition. What she has had to overcome in her life and what she has accomplished, all while being legally deaf, really is remarkable. Her book really is a how-to for navigating your way through life with what can be a debilitating condition.

If you know someone who has or needs a cochlear implant or other type of hearing aid, or who is just hard of hearing, please do them a favor and buy them this book.

Really interesting, man.

Several of my older relatives, including my grandfather, have hearing aid.

Hmmm...very interesting, I myself have lost all of the hearing in my right ear and it gets very frustrating to have ask what someone said to me over and over if they're at my right side. Basically conversation is limited in the car if I'm driving. Price you pay for being 18 and thinking you can fire a mounted .50 caliber machine gun without hearing protection. Live and learn I guess.
Interesting post, I might look into this book further.

Congrats to your wife on getting her book published, she is to be commended for writing such a valuable resource for the hearing impaired.I am lucky enough to have survived playing for years at super high volume without any hearing loss as a matter of fact on my last hearing test I scored way above normal, very surprising cosidering all those years of punishing my eardrums.

Thanks guys. I figure people in the music community are especially cognizant of hearing issues. I know I beat the hell out of my ears with too many concerts when I was younger. :D

Nor is a Bradley FV, or M1Abrams. Lets just say when they told me to use my hearing protection, I should have listened.

I was told that I was 'hearing impaired' and it was suggested that I get hearing aids, but I'd rather hear things 'naturally' even if I do have to listen at a loud volume.

They didn't tell us when we were young, free and loud that those Sunn, Marshall and HiWatts were going to hurt us in later years!

Tinnitus is my biggest concern right now. Always there.......lurking in the background. I have a good amount of hearing loss in my right ear from having my head turned that way while sitting in front of an amp all the years I was learning to play. Guns, motorcycles and other loud hobbies didn't help I'm sure :)

Suggestion - Go to the VA, tell them about your hearing losses and ask them about "fixing" it. ( sorry  I didn't quite know how to word that)
They have provided hearing aids for me, for both sides. They are "tuned" to the frequencies that are "dead" in my ears.

Yeah, I know, none of us want to wear the things - but it's better than 'not hearing' - especially for someone that is involved in music.

Geez I can't even imagine what the 120-mm main tube in an Abrams sounds like at the breech end from inside the crew compartment!

But the 105-mm in the M-60A3 TTS sounded like the devil's own noise, even when crouching in full defilade behind a berm to the rear of the vehicle.

Yeah, we were pretty dumb......

It was shockingly loud and scared the crap out of me the first time I fired one. But more than the sound is the force and the 5000 pound steel breech block recoiling ~36 inches. Brutal to say the least. Like sitting inside a van full of subwoofers at full volume. I thought my chest was going to collapse. lol. After that first time though, it was kind of an addiction
And yeah, I thought I knew everything back then...

The VA is not able to deal with any issues at this time. They are like the public school system.

Yeah...they have been more hassle than help over the last couple of years. In their defense, they have much more pressing issues than my bum knee and bad ears. I have good on the job benefits, so I only go through VA for things my insurance won't cover.
