To me all these players, instead of playing music, seem to just want to show how fast they can shred. It's like junk food; very satisfying for a very short time and then you need something more substantial.

Had a chance to check out some Hound Dog Taylor and Seasick Steve YouTube clips which SA mentioned and really enjoyed both! I actually had checked out Hound Dog before but didn't recognize the name. I saw a thread on here about him having 6 fingers a while ago and watched some vids at the time.

Seasick Steve I had never seen or heard before and dang he can do a lot with one string on a stick! Seriously though, he was killer and some of the slide and fingerpicking looked pretty tough to me, but of course those are techinques I'm not very familiar with.

Valid point but it doesn't seem to apply to Buckethead. The only reason I posted in this old thread was to point out that he is much more than a shredder.

i am sure he gets a new bucket every show, i think he eats the contents before he goes on stage to lube up his hands  that may be how it started. back stage he was chowing down on KFC and realized he was late. then ran out licking his fingers holding the bucket and realized he couldn't hold it and play, so he stuck it on his head

Hi Klowenst, yeah i wasn't particularly meaning Bucket himself more the whole 'who can play the fastest?' type attitude where the guitar is used like a machine gun

I can't listen to that type of guitar playing, the uber speed thing just makes me want to retch after a while. After a while playing endless streams of notes super fast becomes meaningless IMO.

You know what? i think it's a thing that impresses you more when you're young. When you get older it doesn't seem to mean much, that type of playing.

I know what you mean, I'm not huge on shredding as a genre either. BH does his share, which is better than most but I'm particularly into his mellow stuff, which abounds with somewhere around 30 albums out there. He's so versitile, that even as a fan I have a hard time getting to know all of his stuff.
Cheers - K-Low

Yeah, both of them rock in my opinion...and although I play a lot of slide and fingerpick almost exclusively, both Steve and Theodore Roosevelt Taylor play some pretty astounding, intricate stuff...

I've experienced shred coming from the heart only once:

Listen to the Randy Rhoads 'Tribute' album.

Wow. I have known about Buckethead for years, but only his more Shreddy-off-the-wall-stuff. I thought of him more as a gimmick. Man this song is absolutely beautiful.

Ehhhhhh... I've heard of Buckethead too, but he's a little too weird for my taste. Sorry to say, but to me, he's just a "dime-a-dozen" shredder with a bizarre gimic.

No thanks...
