I never really thought about doing that yet. My guitars are pretty new yet though. Do you take all your strings off when you clean the fretboard? I thought that taking all your strings off could change the shape of the neck when the tension of the strings is gone.

Lemon oil. Dr. Stringfellow brand I believe. Works great and smells nice.

I just used some Valve, Slide, and Key oil that I use to keep my Trumpet in good shape (I don't play it, but can't let it seize up). It worked right into the wood and it looks pretty darn good now, plus the grime came right off on the rag I was using (old laundered sock).

I usually use Lemon Oil, but Lemon Oil takes so long to work into the wood I was thinking, "I wish I had a thinner Oil that was clean and quality." and there it was, staring me in the face. I'll let you know if it does anything bad in the long run.

if your girlfriend leaves some lipstick at your place always works in a pinch. should be clear gloss other stuff might not work so well i use chapstick the fret board is always in great shape with it it does'nt take much (i mean tiny amount) when you change strings.

Since my first reply to this thread, I discovered a .pdf page offered at the D'Addario Web site on Fretboard Care.

The article also had a clever idea on making a cutout overylay template in the elongated shape of a fret to use when polishing frets so you don't get any mess on the fretboard wood.
...nice article there...thanks!!! :) I've always used Dr. Stringfellow, seems to do a good job.

Well, your fretboard will dry out a little, all the nasty dead-skin-particles will remain on your fretboard and could muffle your sound a bit. And it looks real nasty... Just use some oiled-toiletpaper over the frets every time you change strings.

Ernie Ball Fretboard Wipes. Easy to use, affordable, and works like magic.

+ 1 on the Gerlitz Guitar Honey! I love that stuff. I use it every string change and I use it on my friends guitars when I do setups for them.

Also the Grime that builds up on the frets will be transfered to the string and then the Nut. Your strings will die sooner and the grime in the nut will cause tuning problems.
