They are. I've played them, borrowed them, but never made one. I'm working on some plans now.

If it sounds like crap, it's not a good guitar. It's either a broken guitar or it's a piece of crap. Price has nothing to do with "good" or "bad".

Likewise with amps. There are several high-end, high-priced, name brand amps that I wouldn't pee on if they were on fire...or plugged in, because I don't want to get shocked.

Amp for me.

Play a mediocre guitar through a nice amp, and it sounds pretty good.
Play a Custom Shop strat through an inexpensive practice amp, and you still get practice amp quality.

For this debate the player is not in the equation because a sucky player will sound sucky on the best gear and a good player can make anything sound ok if the gear works.
The amp defines your sound. On a recording you don't hear the strings acousticly you hear the amp. At a concert you don't hear the strings you hear the amp. And if you hear the tone of the guitar its a good amp thats ment for you to hear it. That same amp may suck for a metal player.

Brilliant, Riley!

Although I don't agree with your breakdown 100% (LOL), I'm glad to see that you realize the player is more important than the equipment, especially at your tender age. It seems to take people waaaaay to long to figure that out (if they ever do).

My personal breakdown:

Player 55%
Guitar 20%
Amp 25%

All things considered, give me a well-set-up guitar and a good amp and I'll be happy.

I laugh at the guys who obsess over what kind of amp, pickup, effect, string, pick, brand of underwear, etc. that their hero used/uses but they never seem to think about the player's feel, attack, phrasing, etc.--the things that make that player what they are.

It's cool to know what type of effects EVH uses/used or what type of amp combinations SRV used at a particular period in his life or the fact that Billy Gibbons occasionally uses an old Mexican peso coin for a pick and Brian May built his guitar out of a fireplace mantle when he was 15, but if you took each of those players and made them trade rigs, they're still going to sound like themselves.

The rig will get you closer to your hero's sound, but the tone is in the hands, my brothers and sisters...
