I guess it's better then just selling the same guitar and giving it a different players name dozens of times?

Longer for the Explorer--although Albert King and Lonnie Mack did quite well with Flying V's--even back then.

Also keep in mind that the Stratocaster--which is probably the world's most common electric guitar shape--was also ridiculed for it's shape & appearance when it first arrived--it was a double cutaway and had long horns. It certainly wasn't traditional, and it was part of the reason Gibson came out with the V and the Explorer. They were countering the impression they only did old fashioned stuff, while Fender had more cool shapes.

Those are cool, but they're no reverse V.

i think the reverse V would of been a better example of what not to do instead of zakks guitar.

But did it actually exist???

A guitar so rare there's not a original example to be found anywhere!
Still I do like em, and the reverse Vee's too.

Zontar.
I'd say there was a marked difference between anything Gibson have ever offered, and the Strat. The Strat was a evolution of the Telecaster. Leo and CO. went asking for player input. Resulting in that ultimately ergonomic design. Practicality and functionality to the max. I fully believe the Tele was destined to die off as far as Leo was concerned. I don't know of another guitar manufacturer that has taken on board the views of so many players for one design.
Whilst it did have people deriding the design, the thing didn't suffer instant dismissal. Mainly because it first went out to a select few that had given ideas for the design.

Tim, those were astute observations; 'snorted coffee all over the keyboard.

Is there really a controversy on whether the original Moderne even existed? If so, I did not know that ...

i'd need to play and hear it first. personally, i think it looks cartoonish. but if i plugged it in and fell in love with it then i might change my mind about the way it looks. maybe....
i think maybe my wife said the same thing about me a few times.
i've had a v and still have an explorer. both took a little while to get comfy with. there is just something about the strat shaped body that feels perfect to me.

There are a few who say it never made it past the first prototype. Whether their basing that on fact, or the fact that no one can find a genuine example, I dunno.
There was a spate of Ibanez factory copies in the 70's, leading Gibson to reissue the Moderne in 82'ish.
Aside from the fact that I can't find one picture of a 58, even. Plenty of folks saying they've played em, but no pictures of verified examples. The idea for those Japanese copies had to come from somewhere, didn't it?
I'm not fool enough to believe that Gibson would freely share their designs. There must be a genuine 58 somewhere.

A modern(e) mystery for sure.

Still, there is a connection--both the Tele & Strat faced some rejection, ridicule and derision early on--they were different.
And Gibson was responding to the acceptance that had happened & decided to go out on a limb with the Explorer & Flying V. Some things work out better than others, but there is a similarity.

I state this because now the Strat seems so accepted, and it is the most copied electric guitar in the world-both for good & bad.

I think that the new version of the Nighthawk is about the only sensible"new"guitar from Gibson for some time. The N.H. has 9 different pickup positions with a coil tapping feature that allows for a wide tonal range. If Gibson spent more time on researching sensible useable guitars rather than guitars with built in obsolescence like the Dark Fire and other robot guitars they may regain some of their credibility.
