I use to play a lot, I'm a guitar student and a part time teacher, so I play a lot. I change them every 3-4 weeks. I use D' Addario EXL 115 in my AM Strat.

I usually wait for tone loss or tuning problems to change mine which usually is every 4 to 6 weeks.

I usually wait until they start turning black or until one breaks and they are dirty. I've only changed them all out once, I've had my guitar since Christmas, so I used the same strings for about six months.
About once a month on whatever axe I'm playing the most.

If my brother in law touches any of them, the strings get changed the next day. He has the most acidic sweat known to man.

X
put a picture on here of the axes'

Keeping my strings clean and lubricated helps a lot.

I wipe down my strings after every playing session. And that's also running a cleaning/polishing cloth between the strings and fretboard, and not just over the top.

Also been using a product called ghs FAST FRET, before and after playing, for many years.

This keeps my strings sounding fairly "new", and no rust, and no crud build-up.

Having said all that - I only change a string when it breaks. And then, I look for the reason why it broke, and correct it. (like a rough spot on a bridge saddle, for example)

I used to use Fender strings. Then I started finding rust on brand new strings, right out of the wrapper. (I don't even find that on my old strings, that have been on my guitar for years) Stopped using Fender strings after that.
Found that I liked D'Aquisto strings and bought several as stock (kept in air conditioned, humidity controlled storage)

No sound problems or breakage problems with strings in a long, long time.

I have found this routine to be less expensive, easier, more effective and less time consuming, than constantly buying and changing strings.

But, as always - to each his own. Whatever works for you. :)

If I'm playing a guitar a lot, I change them every week or after every jam/gig. I'm unfortunate in that I have the most acidic sweat known to man. It eats strings; they look dirty and lose their spank after just a few hours...

If I'm not playing a guitar as much, I try and do it every two weeks (when I get around to it). Gigging guitars get new strings all the time.

'Agree with Chet; 'wash hands before, wipe strings after.

Change them whenever they start to sound stupid.

I play with clean hands, wipe down and have a number of guitars. The rarely used ones get changed maybe once a year. The ones I use all the time, especially if its hot on the patio (I sweat a fair amount) get changed once a month on average. But I have no set schedule ... if I'm playing one and the strings sound dead, won't stay in tune or whatever, they get changed when I next have some time.
