After 3 months of learning approx. 50 songs for a band I joined, we decided to part ways. I felt I wasted so much time on playing all those songs, I've lost the thrill for playing the guitar. I've becomed burned out pushing myself to learn all their music only to have things go sour in one rehersal last week. I haven't felt like playing guitar much at all since. Part of me wants to find another band while another part of me wants to hang up axe for awhile. I put too much effort in a band that nothing was good enough. First asked to do less, then asked to do more, asked to turn it up, then complaints about too loud. Too much static and turmoil for a band. Wears a person out and the thrill is gone. Ever happen to you?

You learn from life's experiences...think positive, set some goals (short and long term) and go after them!

It can be pretty discouraging to be in a band when things don't quite mesh.I joined a popular band years ago and started to play gigs with them but they had a set way of doing things and left no room for improvisation and just kept playing the same middle of the road songs they had been playing for years.I could have stayed with them as long as I wanted but I felt that my creativity and musicianship wasn't being challenged enough and quit.
You did the right thing by splitting, when playing becomes more of a chore than a joy it's time to pack it in.Don't feel discouraged as I'm sure all gigging musicians have been in your shoes.Don't give up on the guitar even though this experience put a sour taste in your mouth. There will be other oppurtunities come along where I'm sure you'll find a bunch of musicians on the same wavelength.Just keep on pickin' and grinnin'.Lots of luck in future undertakings.

I know what you're saying man. I once rehearsed with a band for over two months to do a tour of Germany. We were only a couple of weeks away from start date and the whole thing collapsed. Everybody went off in their own directions.
Yeah!! that kind of thing can ruin your entire day.

Since you're burned out on the band thing, keep playing your axe. Don't get in that frame of mind about your playing. True you learned new songs. That's good, you expanded your worth. Now play what you want to play, and the hell with those guys. They probably played Gibsons anyway.

Its funny you should mention that.... Last time out the lead player brought in a LP Junior...

I thinking of having a complete overhaul of the fretboard anyway... Plus I'm shopping for another guitar since I got rid of my les paul last summer... Maybe a tele, maybe a strat... Fat strat? Don't know...

Well said Mike. My sentiments exactly.

DetroitBlues - I know the feeling well. I have been in that situation multiple times. My main thing is that I'm a songwriter and I get tired of playing someone elses songs and having no input because I'm just the kead guitarist and everyone has an idea of what everyone should be doing. Long story short, I figured the headaches would be much fewer and farther between if I branched out on a solo project. SO that's what I did. I've been working on my music, and if somewhere along this path I encounter somebody that wants to work TOGETHER on some stuff I'm totally down for that. But for now, I'm going to continue working on my tunes, cause that's what makes me happy. Once music gets turned into work, it's not for me. And I'm not saying that it doesn't take hard work along the way, but once I have to force myself to do it, it kind of loses the original meaning in my mind. Don't get discouraged, use this time to re-discover yourself as a musician, and once you're playing what you want to, the thrill will hopefully return.

Sorry to hear things didn't work out. At least you've expanded your repertoire and maybe you can play some of those tunes with a new group down the road. I have learned songs before a first jam, only to have the first jam cancelled and a 2nd one never offered. It sucks but PLAY ON!

Put it down just for a week mate to clear your head then sit down with you favorite drink in a week on a deck or patio rip into the most heartfelt solo you can and realise just how lucky and talented you are to have command of such a cool tool like a guitar!!!!

50 songs is nothing to sneeze at, be proud of that accomplishment. Take the experience and keep going. Playing music obviously motivated you before this happened, just remember that feeling and capitalize on it. New bands can be found, new friends made, that's what it's about. Hang in there and don't give up on the guitar!

Yup, just chuck the blues and go on. As said before, it's about playing guitar, not being with a band. We are musicians (who hang on a social-musical forum) first and foremost.

It can't be that big a bummer; to this memory, there are no blues songs about the band going to chid and breaking up.

Uless you wanna write one.

"Oh, yeah ah's got dem band-breakup blues...."
