Here's a few 'newer' acts I've gotten into over the last few years (I used the quotes for Spoon since they've actually been around for about 15 years or so...) which you may or may not like. I've never heard any of these acts on the FM rock/pop stations around here...

Spoon...

Screaming Females...

The Shins...

Diane Birch...

Spoon= whiny lead singer and they sound like a million other happy go lucky bands out there.

screaming females= a female punk rock meets surf music band, too much distortion, sloppy playing on top of that

shins= much like spoon, they sound like a million other 1 hit wonder bands.

diane birch= now this wasnt too bad, great vocals, and she is obviously hot. best of the bunch so far.

Okkervil River= just sounds like a million more indie label bands I have heard and disliked before.

there may be MORE music out nowadays, but that doesn;t mean there is GOOD music out nowadays, unless you really just flat out force yourself to like some of these bands for the sake of saying good music isnt dead.

I mean do you think ANY of these "new" "good" bands listed in this thread will put out albums that people in large numbers will still be listening to in 20 years like we do with the music that came out in the 60's,70's or even 80's? Naaahhhh

Not to be confused with The Spoons from the 80's!

Keep in mind there was an awful lot of garbage that came out in the 60s, 70s, and (especially!) the 80s, too! :) And this is coming from a child of the 80s...But seriously, I do appreciate you checking out those links.

I think the biggest part of the problem is that the music industry itself has drastically changed overthe last 20 years. There's no way that any of the iconic artists of the past: The Beatles, The Stones, Zeppelin, whomever, could have achieved the same levels of success today. They simply wouldn't have been given the time to develop their sound, nor would they have been given the same level of media attention they recieved in their heydeys.

No question there's a lot of terrible music coming out today, but I think you have to keep searching for those few artists who can continue to move/inspire you. The alternative is awfully boring...

I agree there was a lot of garbage back in the days as well, seems like a lot more these days.

and I agree that one has to search for what inspires THEM as an individual. and no offense meant if the artists posted are bands that inspire you. i think that is a great thing. i still find some artists out theres these days that inspire me, although less and less. so i just dig further back over music from the past and find artists, songs from the good ol days.

cheers

I really dig Robert Randolph. I guess you could call him newer on the scene (started around 2001). I really think he is one of the better new artist out there.

Robert Randolph is great, whether he's with his own band or with The Word. The Black Keys Have been one of my favorites for years from the first time I heard Chulahoma, their album of Junior Kimbrough songs. North Mississippi Allstars, another favorite band of mine of mine.

For what it's worth...If in the past I'd been offered the chance to choose one band to get rid of, The White Stripes would have probably been my choice. Good Riddance. I hope they don't ever come back. Horrible music. If you can call it music.

And I agree it seems to be harder and harder to find new artists who can inspire me the way the bands I listened to as a kid and a teenager regularly did. That's probably due partially to the recording industry, partially to the culture at large, and partially to me just getting older and more crotchety!

Every once in a while, though, I do manage to find a brand new band or a performer who can give me those ol' goosebumps, and that's a nice feeling.
