Jack Bruce inspired me to play bass.

I received the Cream reunion DVD for xmas on year and just watching him play bass the way he did just made me wanna pick up a bass. That was the first time I'd ever seen a fretless too and ever since I've wanted a Fretless Warwick Thumb bass haha.

Since then I've gained many more idols, but hey I can't say that John Paul Jones or Jaco lived, studied or were born in the same city I spend much of my time in today and so he deserves a special place in my favourite musicians list :D

There's a couple of these threads out there but it's been a while so here goes:

John Lennon made me want to be a rock star.
Steve Howe made me want to be a musician.

I thought about it, and I realized I always knew I was a guitar player because My Dad gave me and my Brother a record player when I was 5, and he gave us The Doors, Led Zeppelin 3 and 4, Buffalo Springfield, ect. (no Knick Knack Patty Whack for me). My Dad always had a guitar in the house. My Dad showed my Am G F E, and the opening lick to Thems Baby Please Don't Go when I was 8. I played bass for my Dad when I was 16 and later guitar (we still play all the time, but my Brother's on Bass).

MY DAD inspired me to play. My Mom gave me work ethics and Broad taste in Music (she slipped in the Buffalo Springfield) :D

I have to say if it weren't for my dad I probably would never have picked up a bass or a guitar either! He's always had his old acoustic in the house, he's had it since he was my age.

There should be a Fender Dad Stratocaster.

As for famous gutarists, I'd have to say Jimmy Page. It was the Led Zeppelin Albums that had the biggest effect on me.

Elvis inspired me when I was really little, so I got a guitar strummed it and sang Elvis songs. But then Hendrix did again when I was 10 so I got an electric and took lessons.

I have a three stage answer here:

1. From my earliest recollection, whenever I was at my cousin's house, he always had Elvis music playing on his record player. At about 3 years old, I had asked my cousin what 'that sound' was in the music. He said it was a guitar. Ever since then, I loved hearing the sound of a guitar. So, I guess I have to say that it was Scotty Moore who got me hooked on guitar but ironically, he was never any direct influence on my playing.

2. When I finally started learning guitar as a child, after a mere first two lessons, a friend of mine asked me to play. Naturally, I still couldn't yet. Upon hearing me, he proclaimed with 100% conviction that I was not cut out to play the guitar. This really motivated me to prove him wrong and in time, he admitted it.

3. Growing up in the 60s, there were SO many great guitarists on the rise like Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Ritchie Blackmore, etc. So, there was a wealth of outstanding guitar heroes to look up to and strive to be able to play their material. I honestly cannot single out one as my chief influence. However, of all the aforementioned, they all ultimately play/played Fender Stratocasters and their #1 guitar. It's no wonder that to this day, my #1 guitar is a Strat also.

My grade 7 music teacher made me want to learn to play Bass. As far as musicians are concerned Jaco, Flea, Les Claypool, and Sting to name a view.

As for as guitar, SRV, Hendrix and Gilmour.

Same here, but I liked other artists before I liked Stevie Ray and Jimi. Mayer was one of my first. :)

50's Elvis records were my first musical memories, my mom was a huge fan. So Bill Black taught me what bass is supposed to sound like. I blame him and Dee Dee Ramone for making me pick up the P bass.
