Yes, I've just been watching this on the news, wow! this thing looks huge. Thoughts from Manchester coming over to everyone who is affected by this.

Quite an understatement. I mentally projected the perimeter of the storm across Australia. The area it could potentially cover is enormous. 180-190 mph winds to boot.

Man, that thing was massive. I heard the sheer power of that cyclone harnessed enough energy to power the earth for a year! I have a brother in Mackay who said the winds there were fairly strong, and they are ages away from the eye! 300kph winds I do believe hit mission beach... it's just insane!. I heard of someone who needed help with evacuating and the storm was soo strong they had to leave that person but keep contact. Luckily no-one was killed.

I don't know whats up with our luck riley, sept was earthquakes for us, jan was floods for you and now Yasi- we also were hit with a cyclone and a surge just over a week ago which sent waves smashing over & flooding a major highway in Auckland, and major flooding in the far north.

Australia are a tough bunch, they will get through it. Really down on the luck though. No-doubt NZ will send help to Queensland rickytick. We are thankful no-one was killed, yet two lives were born- one in a evac shelter.

Principally crop damage, I'm given to understand. Fortunate that it didn't come on shore over one of the major cities. Hurricane force winds and high rise structures are a recipe for mass destruction.

we also had floods in september, but floods in january, even we got flooded, and it NEVER floods in january. actually it doesn't rain in january. QLDer's are very unlucky though, but as you said they can stand anything and rebuild quickly

I just got out of perfect 4 foot cyclone swell one hour ago one tiny little good thing out of the disaster perfect waves. I am 1000klm south of Yasi on the Gold Coast thats how powerful it was.

Our state had suffered some huge blows in the last month, 75% of our State, Queensland is in a disaster zone and i live in the south east corner and nearly feel guilty that it all has missed us.

I walked though Brisbane CBD (the heart of the floods) 65 klm north of me, one week after it was a river and the ruined shops and resturants and homes with all there furniture and stock and in 100's of cases complete interior out on the street waiting for the council to come and pick up the mess that was there income and life was just heartbreaking. And now the cyclone that was bigger than Katrina flattens thousands of homes up north and the floods are starting again. It is chaos here. Thank god i live in the one area that has not copped it. Our state economy is over gone and dead, That's why i sit on this forum all day at the moment because work is just a ghost town. Nothing to do because the state is not buying anything just rebuilding. Small issue for me life changing issues for a huge portion of my fellow states people....There is so so so so many familys that just lost EVERYTHING with no insurance, it will be like sell the block of land for stuff all and start from scratch which in most cases means game over too late the end for a comfortable life for these people it's absolutely horrible and the sadest thing you could ever imagine.....
